Antietam log book records theft of all food and cooking materials on 8/21/03 of two (section?) hikers.

Yes--if I remember correctly, food and stove (and all stuff smelling of food) were hung overnight at Antietam. They awoke to find everything gone. Fellow hikers helped out; took them into town. Correction:though the theft was at Antietam, the log book entry was at the Tumbling Run shelter 1 mile up the trail where they stayed after losing the day.--CeCe

Antietam shelter is TOO close to the road and park. We were there during the spring and it was used as a party spot. There was trash everywhere and the shelter smelled or urine. The log was nothing but a doodle pad for the party goers and full of hateful slogans and pictures. If you have a chance to pass by this shelter do so and continue north to Tumbling runs... it is well worth the few extra miles.... TRUST ME!

agreed. skip this shelter. theres still plenty of chances of staying in a 1940s era shelter safer from non hiker persons, like toms run.
