But-- I can bring something. This'll be motivation to drive fast on Friday morning. Mapquest says its only 8 hrs 19 min from Philly to Damascus...now to explore the matter of a car.....

I have to agree with LW. If I had to choose between the Gathering and TD, I'd choose the Gathering. It is less party and more substance. While I learn some about new equipment at TD, I learn a lot more that helps me be a better trail citizen and improves the quality of my trail experience at the Gathering. YMMV

05-05-2007, 12:48
Social interaction with my fellow hikeres, especially while on a hike getting to interact with your "class" and meet folks you might be separated from by only a few days of hiking but might otherwise never have met is the key element, different than the gathering crowd, which is mostly packsniffers. Plus it's not during the season. But I'll be at the gathering, too, don't worry...or worry. Or be afraid....very afraid.

Frolicking Dinosaurs
05-05-2007, 12:51
There are substances at both, but they are used at the Gathering and abused by many at TD - part of the reason I prefer the Gathering. Dinos are old codgers, but I can't recall anyone referring to us as wet blankets. Rowdy drunks and people who are so stoned they can barely walk are not my idea of a good time.

the pancakes of mala, for being slow and unstacked, have been attacked. what say ye oh mala of the ether?when malas gone you'll wish you had one pancake , framed, on the wall in your kitchen, as you drink your batchlormade coffie in a malaless world. and when you miss him enough you'll drink too many beers one night and come home from cryin about mala at dots. and you'll try to whip up a single pancake in memory of him and instead you"ll wake up in the morning still at the kitchen table. alone, hand grasping the dozen eggs stil on the table. thats as far as you got on your pancake tare last night and now your a malaless lonewolf with no breakfast at all. and it'll serve you right. unstacked indeed. i for one shall wait my half hour and savor my single cake , and mala too! lol. as far as the gathering being better, so? trail days is good enough. good enough to take our collective mind off the impending dewobbeling of the earth into a terminal death spin/pole shift long enough to have a chat and a cake. ill take that over horrible seperation from god and eternity with evil boy saten any single searve morning. and i have an idea. an army of malas created by robot refugees in my super secret lexlutherlike sewer workshop under my apartment.creating pancakes at traildays. putting traildays on the map and frameing the gathering in a slightly less abundently pancaked manner. i will now demonstrate lone wolfs scary internet side.

Wanderer, thanks for picking up the Tuesday a.m. shift. Specific jobs include putting up the curtains on the high windows at Rock School - involves some climbing, or a lot of climbing. Jobs at the campground, assuming we have put up the bulletin board, moved the bridges, and that Miss Janet's crew has cleared the firepit area, will be clearing the poison ivy from the quiet area, and moving some large logs for the bonfire. We'll also clear out some areas across the creek. We could use some weedeaters or other brush cutting equipment. We'll try to have several on-site for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

pretty likely the town has this equipment and it is a town function

The town has four maintenance employees, and one of them is about 75 years old. Weedeaters are assigned to a specific town employee and they won't give them up for fear of damage. The town has some other weed-cutting stuff they will loan us. They only have three working weedeaters, by the way.

In an ideal world, or in a more populous area, this would indeed be a town function. But Damascus has under a thousand people and few employees. That's why we need volunteers. Fortunately there are many local residents who will volunteer, and many hikers and others from out of town who will volunteer. Trail Days does not just happen, in spite of the perspective of some. It does not just spring magically out of the ground each May. It takes individuals willing to work and put in some time to make it happen.

Come out to the campground Monday a.m. and help us put up a bulletin board, clear for a firepit, clear the camping area of poison ivy, put a couple of bridges over soggy areas, clean the bathrooms, and other stuff. Ex-Marines are particularly welcome.

there are no ex-Marines. just former

Well, hell, in the famous words of Richard Nixon, I misspoke myself. "Ex" in terms of active duty. But "former" may not be right either. As Trail Yeti says, "There are no Ex-Marines....once a Marine, ALWAYS a Marine."

Geez. I think that butt-stroke to the head at Parris Island messed up my brains. But the DI had good reason, so I can't complain.

Thanks to Mala for offering to cook for volunteers on Monday. We will take up a collection and eat around 3 p.m. if anyone is interested.

congessmen and women gather at the rotunda where dino lies in state after colapsing from ceromonial exaushton. awards for bravery are awarded postumusly by ex president hillery clinton(this happens far in the future when your 43rd grand is grading) a moment of scilence,... and poof! dinos tale moves. poof poof!!... dinos eyes open! it seems ceromonial exaustion only causes ceromonial death! hildabeast grabs back the awards and storms out.

moral: trail days is hard work to miss.

Glad to hear rumors of my demise were greatly exagerated. Can't wait to see you again, Matt. 43rd grand.... it could happen. The younger kids haven't started their families yet. BTW, rumor has it yet another great-grand is on the way (no confirmation yet)

Hello friends....

Pretty soon most of us will be seeing each other somewhere in Damascus....I love that thought :D :D :D

All right Uncle Silly....no pictures....even though everyone thought you were Adrien Brody :) And that's a good thing !

I'd like to remind everyone of the Hiker Reception at Rock School on Friday from 1pm to 5pm. It would be nice to see some of my old and new Whiteblaze friends!

See you all in a few days. I'm packing now. I won't sleep until then either. I love my AT family.
