What gave it away, Celt? The Retina camera or the Birdshooter boots? :O) That's Earl Shaffer's gear from his 1948 hike. He said his full pack would weigh between 35 and 45 pounds, Tracy.

I've seen his '48 gear list before but I can't remember where exactly. I looked around my books a bit but when it didn't jump out I decided to guess it was Earl's. I should've answered "Who is Earl Shaffer?" and wagered all my money.

Yes the birdshooters and the camera where early signs. The zipper salvaged from the Marine tent to make a sleeping bag out of a blanket was also a familar story.

I feel like re-reading "Walking With Spring" now.
