View Full Version : Long torso, backpack suggestions?

I've used, in the past, a *large* backpack, but these days, I don't ever want to carry enough gear to fill it.

I'm looking for a 3000ci backpack, ideally around 3 lbs or less... with a 23" or 24" torso. And yes, that's the measurement I get, and that other folks get when they measure me. I'm 6'9", so gear is a bit tough.

Any ideas?

(Thank you - hugely - to those who pointed me in the right direction for a tent a few months back. :-)

A GG Vapor Trail might fit you (21-25), but it is larger at 3900 ci. I'd keep an eye on how fixed the suspension system is, given that you may be nearing the longer end of a pack's range. The VT is fixed.

My current pack is 4000, and expands out to about 4500, so 3900 isn't saving too much (unless the fit is better). Hrrrm.

Some one will likely chime in with a better option. How much does your current pack weigh?

Maybe the GG Virga? Couldn't think of the smaller pack's name earlier. It's fixed too though.

Maybe inquire at ULA (http://www.ula-equipment.com).

I just measured the framesheet of my GG VT size L, it's apprx. 22". THe VT does have straps on top of the shoulder straps (dunno what you call 'em) that connect to the top of the pack and allow you to adjust the tension placed on top of the shoulder straps, this might make up for the couple of inches in pack length for you.

The problem I have with most packs is that those straps have to go *up* to reach my shoulders, which makes them not-as-handy.

I would agree with Alligator. Give Brian at ULA a call. They make all their packs once the order is received, so he may be able to customize one for you. If not, I'm sure he would give you a suggestion if he knows of any other solution for you. He is a great guy, and the packs are FANTASTIC.

Maybe inquire at ULA (http://www.ula-equipment.com).

The Conduit looks awesome, but not sold in XL. I'm going to bounce them an email, see if it could be done for a price.

If you want something different, consider the gearskin. I have a 21" torso and mine weighs about 20oz. I have carried 35 lbs with it just fine.

If you like frameless packs I would recommend the Mariposa Plus

My one son is 6'4" with a 23" torso it works just great for him.
I can use it at 5' 8" with a 21.5" torso and its comfortable for me as well.

Forgot to add :
Capacity:
Body is 2,900 c.i
Max is 4,200 c.i.
Weight is 17.8 - 20.5 oz depending on what you have as options
Max Load is 35 lbs

I have a 22" torso and do not have trouble finding a pack. Most major brands...size L (or XL if available) frames fit fine. I'd say just go try some on in stores via trial and error. Dont buy anything you havent tried on (ie, online).

Everything I've tried on has been a terrible fit, as I have longer than a 22" torso. Most of the manufacturers that stock XL don't do so in 3000ci-size packs, which makes it worse in this particular hunt. :-/

Sounds like you need something custom made. Gearskin or ULA would be happy to help.

Look into the external Luxury Lite frame.. it is self adjusting and might be able to be special ordered...

I have a Ospry Crescent 75 used twice that I'll give you a sweet deal on. I'm 6-1, it's too long for me. PM me if you might be interested.

Thanks for the offer, and would love to get a deal on one, but tried one on at an REI over the weekend... too short. :-/

Following up on the thread, emailed ULA and waiting for a response. Hopefully they'll be able to help out. Thanks to everyone for helpful replies!
