What does "getting diagonal" mean?

It is mainly used in talking about Hennessy Hammocks. It is where your head is on one side of center and your legs on the other. Usually your head on the left and your legs on the right. It helps you lay flatter than in center. Most people lay this way in other hammocks too.

laying at a diagonal to the two attachment points allows you lie flatter and more comfortably...otherwise you would be bent into a banana shape and after a while that would be pretty hard on the back.
