Planning hike on AT thru the Great Smoky National Park. There used to be a shelter located at False Gap with a spring. Does anyone know if this spring is still accessible from the AT to resupply your water ???

Sitting in my review class for EU law, bored out of my school. Trying to find an answer to your question online was a good timewaster.
This is what I found.

“1. Further north(east) of Dry Sluice Gap trailhead on the AT within about one mile there are the remains of an old trail shelter at "False Gap." It is about 100 yards down an embankment to the north of the AT, but it cannot be seen from the AT.

Still on topo:

Guidebook: reach False Gap (5,400 feet). A good spring is located about 1/4 mile from northern slope from False Gap at former shelter site

Thanks for info. I had noticed its location a a USGS quad . Does anyone know if there is a rail or if you would have to scramble down a steep forrested slope to find it?

Was thinking if if had easy access it would be good place to resupply water if needed.

It was a pretty steep trail down to the old False Gap Shelter from the AT. Not worth the effort, in my opinion.
