My wife and I are planning to hike from US 21/52 ( Bland , Va.) to US 220/I 81 ( Troutville, Va.) . We hope to begin our trip on November 9. We will appreciate advice regarding shuttles and recommendations for parking. Our preference will be to leave our vehicle in a safe place near the trips end . Anyway, help and thanks.

An alternative to Troutville is Daleville a few miles before Troutville. Daleville offers more places to leave a car than does Troutville....There is an outfitter in Daleville in a small strip mall not too far off the Trail...can't remember the name but I bet others on Whiteblaze will...Point is, they may have the information you are looking for....

EDIT: found the info...Outdoor Trails, 28 Kingston Drive, Daleville, VA 24038 (540) 992-5850 EDIT

I received 1st class service from a shuttle provider who lives near Troutville. His name is Maurice and he has almost completed the AT in sections. His email address is [email protected].

The Best Western Coachman Inn is located at the US-220/Trail crossing in Daleville (540-992-1234). They have preferred rates for hikers and you might consider staying there the night you finish (mmm...hot shower) in exchange for parking your car for the week.

if you are staying in town at the end of your hike, Econo has far cheaper rates than its across the road neighbor, best western. I think it was about 60+ bucks at BW and 40 bucks at econo for 2 double beds. The supposed hiker friendly folks at BW didn't seem flexible on making us a deal. Econo also has free complementary krispy kreme and coffee in da mornin.

The outfitter at Daleville is Outdoor Trails. The folks there are very helpful. If you don't see what you're looking for, be sure to ask. It's probably there somewhere.

When we did the Troutsville to Harpers Ferry sections, they let us park for 2 weeks in exchange for just a promise to spend the night there when we returned. Lodging was $48 per night (in 2001) plus tax and two weeks parking seemed like a good deal to me.

I agree with Hikerkead about the guys at Outdoor Trails. Very helpful and friendly.
