I have been giving this some thought and I was thinking of having a bunch of cotton shirts printed up to sell at Trail Days. I can get a really good deal on them provided it is not to late to get them done before Trail Days.

I have attached the image I was thinking of putting on the front of a gray style t-shirt.

What does everyone think about this Idea. I am not saying this will happen but it would be neat if I could get this shirts done up and sell them for $6 each. I would need to check on the price though.

Cool man.

$6 is a hell of a deal.

People would pay $10 to support this place, I will.

Plsu it will be a cool shirt for me to hike the ADT in till it falls apart.

As long as you wear it with an over-the-shoulder-boulder-holder, it'll be OK. I sure hope the "Manssiere/Bro" never catches on. :p

In 2000 I hiked into Trail Days. The Post Office was selling T-shirts with the year on them so I bought two. It sounds like a good idea to me to sell a White Blaze T-shirt with "Trail Days" and "the year" on it.

I recently lost 70 pounds on the Pacific Crest Trail but found 45 of it back in Dallas....I hoe it gets lost somewhere between Delaware and Denver...:D

Hey Troll...could I get a Shirt that says

"PLEASE JUST TELL ME YOUR NAME!" On it?

I have the hardest time with all the faces with and without beards, with and without guts, with and without breast Ive meet over the years since 1998.

Or if you know me, and you say hello, say "Hey Im ---------. remember me Lion King>?"

So I can smile and remember....

I am waiting to here back from the shirt guy to see if he can get these done by Trail days.

I like the second one.

Now not to be a spoil sport but You might want to check and see if the name Trail Days is copyrighted or trademarked. Seeing as Backpacker is a sponsor and allot of corporate entities and Damascus are involved it would be safe to assume it is. I seem to remember back in 01 that MRO or some one was selling shirts and could not use that phrase and had to reword it to say trail daze because of the copyright or trademark. I may be wrong and hope I am but better safe than sorry. I did a cursory search and found that the phrase Trails Day is trademarked by the AHS.

Like I said I did a cursory search I did this here;

http://www.copyright.gov/

http://www.uspto.gov/

Like I said I am not sure if it is or not. I am hoping not but in todays climate I really think it would be best to know for sure. I'm sorry to be a stick in the mud but it is better to be safe than sorry. Copyright and Trademark infringement is something we don't want to mess with if it can be avoided. If the plan was to give them away might not be a real big deal but as you plan on selling them it becomes a different matter as now money is involved. We all know money tends to make people do stupid things.

I just started another search and it turned up 24195 documents I have to go thru.

Good idea.

I got thru the documents i said I had to go thru and found nothing to indicate it was trademarked.

I would aslo have him ask about the slogan as well. Well now that I look at the site for trail days they have it as "People Are The Trail' and Attroll has it as "People R The Trail' in the second version. So I feel it should be safe there.

Like I keep saying I don't want to be a spoil sport. I just don't want Attrol and the site to get involved in something that can be avoided.

"Trail Days" is registered through the Virginia State Corporation Commission. This does not seem to constitute a copyright, but we are researching this. I'll get a copy of the registration document and see what the implications might be.

ATTroll, keep in mind there is an Oregon Trail Days (http://www.oregontraildays.com/) , a Trail Days in California (http://www.orovillemr.com/news/ci_5797205) (http://www.orovillemr.com/news/ci_5797205%29), one in Colorado (http://www.colorado.com/event-detail-3789) and probably a few others. It seems obvious by this that the two words as a unit, "Trail Days," are not copyrighted.

I think you will be safe in going ahead with this. If there is further information I'll let you know, but unofficially it should be ok.

Takoma Tedd will kick off the Hiker Talent Show with his song, "People are the trail." He will be introduced by Miss Janet, and we've asked her to say a few words in recognition of his song.

The schedule is here: http://www.traildays.info/schedule07.html

And at your suggestion I've added his name to the front page of the website, http://www.traildays.info/

This year the Trail Days committee (all volunteers) had a national competition for the design, which was posted on various hiker forums including White Blaze. The committee picked the design over several other good designs, and the response has been very good.

Those seeking improvement are invited to join the Trail Days committee.

Lion King, our apologies for the lack of communication. The person who volunteered to set up the workshops did nothing for several months, so we found someone else who is now working with Jeff and others to make sure these oversights are corrected. As you know, when working with volunteers you sometimes get what you pay for. Let us know what else you need, or e-mail me at grs @ damascus.org (remove the spaces) and I'll give you my cell phone # for any other requests.

The following note was sent to all members of the Trail Days committee:

....................
Tonya, a search of the US copyright office does not reveal any copyright of "Trail
Days." There is no copyright, no trademark, no patent, nothing that would
give us exclusive use of these two words. There is also a Trail Days in Oregon,
California, Colorado, and probably several more I couldn't find. There is no
legal barrier to someone else using "Trail Days." Although we are registered
with the Virginia State Corporation Commission, this does not constitute copyright.

I suggest the town look into copyrighting the names "Damascus Trail Days"
and "Appalachian Trail Days." In the meantime, if someone wants to sell
shirts with "Trail Days" on them there is no legal reason why they cannot
do so.

Richard

....................

We again invite those of you with suggestions, either positive or negative, to join this volunteer committee and help us put on Trail Days. No pay, some headaches, but a lot of positive energy. Our next meeting is Tuesday 8th at Town Hall, 7 p.m. If you're in town come join us. Trail Days does not just happen automatically. There's a lot of slogging to get this done, and we could use your help.

Local great news!! Thanks

By the way a Copyright is not the way to go with this. It needs to be trademarked.

Copyright may subsist in a wide range of creative, intellectual, or artistic forms or "works". These include poems, theses, plays, and other literary works, movies, choreographic works (dances, ballets, etc.), musical compositions, audio recordings, paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs, software, radio and television broadcasts of live and other performances, and, in some jurisdictions, industrial designs. Designs or industrial designs may have separate or overlapping laws applied to them in some jurisdictions. Copyright is one of the laws covered by the umbrella term 'intellectual property'.

A trademark or trade mark is a distinctive sign or indicator of some kind which is used by an individual, business organization or other legal entity to uniquely identify the source of its products and/or services to consumers, and to distinguish its products or services from those of other entities. A trademark is a type of intellectual property, and typically comprises a name, word, phrase, logo, symbol, design, image, or a combination of these elements. There is also a range of non-conventional trademarks comprising marks which do not fall into these standard categories.

The owner of a registered trademark may commence legal proceedings for trademark infringement to prevent unauthorised use of that trademark.

Pirate, I agree that going back to the past would be pleasant in many cases. My preference would be for Damascus to be like it was when I grew up around here, and the biggest worry was fighting our way out of town when we came over from Abingdon to date the girls in Damascus. What is now the Creeper Trail was a slow train which would drop us off in the mountains to go fishing, and then pick us up on the way back. Good old days.

And the Trail Days campsite is moving back to the river, just this time it's Beaverdam Creek. You can hang your hammock out over the water, or wade across and find a place on the upstream island. And we'll have to catch you outside the Bingo Hall, because it is closed to us due to an unfortunate incident during Trail Days last year. We can no longer use it for Trail Days activities. This was a case of local people telling us what to do, or what not to do. Backpacker doesn't tell us what to do, just provides some financial help. I can't think of a single "order" or direction they've given us. If you would like to come to our meeting Tuesday 8th, you'll see how decisions are made, and see there is no "outsider" telling the volunteer committee what to do. And you can help "Give Trail Days back to the hikers!!" by being involved.
