This is another of the pay shelters where it costs $6 to stay (though the caretaker didn't show up the day I was there.) It is a low roofed shelter, which would be excellent in the rain. Very long -- could easily fit 12 or more and has the beautiful music of a rushing stream right in front of it (which is also the water source.) There is also a double tent platform right next to the shelter as well.

I had a wonderful night listening to the stream's lullaby at the shelter.

My brother and I were there last October for a mid-day stop. There is a fire pit with an iron grill/plate above it for cooking. Someone apparently thought it would be funny to bend the thing downward (must have stood on it) so as to render it useless. Shame.

Nice Shelter. stayed there on the first day of my section hike, about 10 mi. from vt11. there was no caretaker there (july 1st 2007). The info about the fees was posted in the shelter, though another hiker told me that they may not be charging there anymore since it's so close to the lake. not sure.

Is the grill thing still bent? Fixed? There at all?

Perhaps all shelters should be "pay".
Where along the trail do they start charging for shelters?
Does it deter all but the "best" hikers?

Nearly Normal (hiker trash)

There are only a few shelters were you have to pay a small fee. These are only in places where garbage would pile up quickly if there was no one there to deter it.

Aug 2013. Sited right on trail. Nice stream in front. Build with logs, sleeping platform set above floor. One tent platform. No other tentsites (Griffith Pond tentsites are 1m north on LT/AT).

Even though some guide books say this is a pay site, Peru Peak Shelter and Griffith Lake tent platforms have not had a caretaker present in 2012 or 2013. Therefore, no one pays at either site.

Stayed there several years ago just after the rebuild on my Vermont section and watched a German speaking hiker nearly "brain" himself on that low overhang, be careful!

Just stayed there recently, very lovely place. And well maintained. Now the trail from Peru peak shelter to Bromley, kinda messed up in the winter. Not well blazed.

I was there this past weekend and I did not plan to stay there, but Griffith Lake. It was raining and I had been out in it for a while so decided to stay here. Heard the brook coming in, very nice and shelter was clean with a very large overhang. I hung my stuff to dry and set up the hammock near the brook. An esoteric gentleman came in and made a pretty good fire out of some punky ass wood. Definitely would stay there again, nice shelter and built by the c.c.c!
