Another fee shelter (though the caretaker did not show up to collect the $6 while I was there... perhaps it is already past caretaker season??) This is an older shelter, not in great shape and could comfortably sleep six. Get your water from the spring at Little Rock Pond or from the stream before you head uphill to the shelter since those are the water supplies.

Apparently, the shelter used to be on an island on Little Rock Pond. It was dismantled and brought to its current site, where it gets a lot more use.

When the shelter was on the island, did hikers take a canoe (s) to get there? How long ago was this? Poison Ivy, how do you know so much about the shelter areas? Backpacking thru? Curious, because I am backpacking AT and have clocked in 500 miles....a few of us still need to do upper AT in VT. Maybe sometime you would like to join us. (We are with the Green Mountain Club-CT chapter) and sometimes we get some non-club members to go with us, or I go solo. Always looking for more hikers. (You can go for free....don't have join the club in order to go). Anycase, if interested check out our website, Green Mountain Club (CT chapter) or you can contact me directly at [email protected] (203) 256-0012 in Fairfield, CT...Happy Trails! I'm not sure who used the shelter before it was moved, but my "Exploring the Appalachian Trail" book says it was moved to its current location in 1972. For some reason my brain collects these type of trivia "factoids" from the guidebooks.

I wrote a lot of the shelter entries because the VT forum was lacking them as I hiked through the state last summer. I'm section hiking the New England AT and have finished CT through near Pinkham Notch in NH.

I seem to recall there is a nice picture of the shelter on the island in the GMC's LT history/picture book. I think there was a little footbridge, as the island is close to shore. I believe it was moved for overuse/impact reasons.

That GMC link above isn't working for me. Edit: Now it's fine, just a temporary thing.

On my section hike through there last winter, we came into Little Rock Pond shelter on snowshoes around midnight. Beautiful place. In the morning, I immediately lost the LT by cruising down a wash to the right of the actual trail. Ooops, those white blazes are hard to see when they are buried in snow.

Hey, nice map link. If I am not mistaken, the trail currently passes East of the pond, yes?

I dug up this 1893 topo of the area. You can see the village of Aldrichville and its access road, just northeast of Little [Rock] Pond? Now it's just a ghost town of cellar holes and stone walls on the LT/AT.

New shelter to be built during 2010. Both Lula Tye and the current shelters will remain open while the new one is being built.

Considering this is a fee shelter, is tenting allowed there?

Disregard my post, I just read in the Companion that the Little Rock Pond Tenting Area is right near there.

You're right. It's south, back toward Lula Tye shelter, and serves them both.

The Little Rock Tenting area has 4 platforms (if my memory serves me right), 2 singles and 2 doubles.

New in 2010. Spacious with covered porch/eating area. Tent platforms and a few tentsites adjacent. Caretaker lives next door. Hear and saw a loon on the pond Aug 2013. Water was fine from spring 50yds north on AT.

I just hiked this section last week and am curious to know if this shelter still exists. It was mid-day when I passed through the area so I did not search out the shelter, but I saw no sign directing hikers to the shelter and there was a hand drawn map of the area (photo attached) which shows the tenting area but no shelter.

It most certainly does exist. I stayed there on my 2017 E--to-End LT hike and have visited the shelter 2 other times in the last 3 years. Shelter has been rebuilt recently. Plenty of tenting space in the vicinity.
