I just launched my latest labor of love, TrailPhone.net (http://trailphone.net), a service which lets A.T. hikers call a phone number (877-99-TRAIL) to record audio updates and map their hike's progress using the touch tone keypad. (You don't need a cell phone. This will work from payphones, phones at hostels, etc.) Everything gets posted / mapped instantly on TrailPhone.net. You can click on the little markers on the map to hear the entries, you can download them as a podcast, or you can have TrailPhone.net email you whenever a new post is made.

Not only can hikers record over the phone, they can also listen to one another's entries, and know whats going on ahead and behind them on the trail. Hikers can search entries on the phone by hiker id or mile range.

Please let me know how I can improve the service, etc. If you're on or near the trail feel free to create an account and record an audio update over the phone. Thanks.

Thanks ShakeyLeggs. BTW, I forgot the mention the service is free. If any of you guys cross paths with thru-hikers looking for an interesting way to document their journeys, please let 'em know about this.

(ok, enough shameless self promotion for now)

Works here. Maybe you could try again? :)

Maybe the Gubbament has blocked it. I'll try it when I get to the house tonight.

Very cool!! And very kind of you to give back :D I will give this a shot on my section with my little one in June. Nice way for Mom to hear the little voice...

Thanks Blackmath. Nice blog by the way. Are you thinking about using TrailPhone.net for upcoming thru-hike this summer? Are there any features you'd like to see? Let me know.

Until I saw where you were posting from, I though: "Oh great. Another kook." After that, I thought you'd be more likely right than not. :)
