http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/7/7_2_211.gif (http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb001_ZNxmk762YYUS) Hey March Firsters 19 days to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

vtdrifter
02-10-2008, 16:22
I hope to start between march and april. Started last year in mid february and had plenty of time to spare and that includes working in Port
Clinton, Pa for three weeks.

if you don't mind me asking, how and for who did you manage to find work for such a short amount of time?

SOBO starting mid July (if things work out). Will try to go as far south as possible, but not committed to a thru-hike if that requires walking past November.

:clap

Today I FINALLY booked my flight to Atlanta and made reservations for the Hiker Hostile on April 9th!

Thats it! I am OFFICIALLY committed....what a feeling. Almost eerie thinking of how my life will change less than 2 months from now. I absolutely cannot wait.

It's amazing thinking of all the firsts that await me on this walk...
-first time to backpack more than 10 days
-first time to (God willing) visit 13 of the trail states, 2nd visit to Tenn.
-first time to stay in a hostile

So many things to look forward to...I am in pre-hike bliss!

Oh, I also narrowed down a trail name for myself.......I am now SLURPEE!

speaking of sci-fi movies we can call sanderson up there, ms. anderson. but you have to say it the voice of agent smith from the matrix all slow like when he would call neo mr. anderson. unless of course her last name isn't anderson then i'm just an idiot.

I was going to start mid March but I got a chance to start early so I was on Springer Feb. 9th. I got to Neels Gap the morning of the 13th. The trail is lonley this time of year, only saw about six people in four days. I got to the hostle just in time for an ice storm. I did get a trail name, Cool Breeze. I have to go to San Diego Feb. 27th and should be back on the trail about March 16th.I can't wait to get back out there. Any questions about that part of the trail right now I'll be glad to help. Water was plentiful. See you all on the trail.

I have two more weeks of waiting tables and then I'm headed out. Not in a traditional fashion though. I'm not going to be able to start an actual nobo thru, but will instead be starting at Clingman's Dome in the Smokies. Should be on the AT around March 18 in that area. I made it to Dalton that year. Went back to Katahdin last year and hiked through NH.

What about you? how far did you go?

Had exposure to hiking sections of the AT in Boy Scouts growing up, mostly did NJ and PA. Was always a fat kid ... am overweight now. Its a concern of mine but I know my limits. Trying to achieve not only getting in shape and losing weight, but maintaining a healthy life style, which I strongly desire. Also looking for this to be a major turning point in my life. Realized the possibilities of achieving this while section hiking easter weekend of 2006. Ran into Dirty Feet *Rachel* Brody, and the famous No Pain! I believe fate smiled upon me and I meet these people for a reason. Dirty Feet is now my hiking buddy this year! We're gonna attack this thru hike together. And No Pain and Brody are huge inspirations. I now feel comfortable with "letting go" and taking off to do this! It's going to be slow moving in the south .... but with physical conditioning ... I should be able to speed up comfortably and make it to Maine! :-) I've faired well on some of the most rugged sections in PA *Section 3 the Knife Edge/Section 2 out of Lehigh Gap!* But I'm sure that doesn't compare to areas of New England. Look forward to meeting ya'all!! Look for the quirky fat boy scout and the punk girl on the trail! lol :sun

Hey y'all! I'm taking the bus from Austin, Texas to get into Gainesville on April 16; I booked the ticket this morning. I can't wait to meet everyone. I've been looking forward to this trip since my first trip into the Smokies in 1997... I obviously put it off too long!

No trail name yet, but I look forward to getting initiated.

Be safe, and happy trails.

Start Date: May 11 or right around then
any additional info that you want the world to know: I'm a vegan so food should be interesting (not a problem, just not the tuna and jerkey that everyone else seems to eat!).

Not sure yet... Ami. Falls or USFS42?

As the snow falls here in Maine, I can feel the sun shining on my back in Georgia. I can't wait to get into the world after too much time inside. I'm attempting to ease off my obsession of the trail, but I can't stop thinking about it just the same -- everyone I see, I wonder, "When will I see you again?" and when i look at the next week of my life, it's one long check-list of equal priorities. I'm sad, elated, frustrated, scared (actually, petrified), and optimistic. What competing emotions. My friend Flutterby (Class of '98) said to me last night, "I've been watching you evolve. You're not an introvert, but you've turned inward over the past few months. There is so much going on in your head and you have no idea how to process it all." She hit the nail on the head, folks. See you on Springer.

Hey folks, picked up two young ladies today at Dick's Creek Gap right before a pretty rough thunderstorm kicked up. I had my family with me on the way to the planetarium at Young Harris, so all I could offer them was the back of the truck, but I think they appreciated it nonetheless. Well needless to say with it pouring outside I dropped them at the Holiday Inn Express in Hiawassee, and with my kids hollering they were hungry, was on my way. If anyone knows who these two yound ladies might have been, I'd love a heads up, I would like to read their journals if they are keeping one. One was from Ohio, one was from Michigan I think. They said they'd been on the trail 9 days, so I guess that puts them starting on 3/26/2008. Thanks!!

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. Change in my Thru hike for 2008!
Well I had started off in April as a NOBO BUT soon after some problems at home had me heading back north by car. All is taken care of and I am going back to my thru hike BUT ...... this time as a flip flopper. Planning to do Harpers Ferry to Maine and Harpers Ferry to Georgia. Leaving very end of May or very beginning of June. Hoping to find some hiking partners/friends/buddies since I had to part with mine and she will still be in southern Virginia when I start.
