I am passing along this notice from Matt Owens. Please check it out and see if you are interested in becoming involved. (sorry the tabular data didn't copy well - you can still follow the dates and region abbreviations)

Appalachian Trail Visitor Use Study

UGA Warnell School of Forestry/USFS/NPS/ATC

Thank you for requesting information on the Appalachian Trail (A.T.) Visitor Use Study. Currently we are seeking volunteers to help us interview and count hikers in the Trail study area.

An interview schedule for the June 1 – August 14 study period has been developed. Because of the size of the study area, five regions within the study area have been identified. The purpose of identifying regions is so individuals who are physically close to or familiar with specific sections of the Trail will be able to conduct interviews in those areas. You may of course choose to interview in more than one region.

Below you will find a calendar where interviews will take place by region. Field interviews will occur in six hour shifts of either 8 am to 2 pm, or 2 pm to 8 pm.

If you choose to participate, you will be volunteering through the Appalachian Trail Conservancy’s volunteer program.

Additional study information is available at http://www.srs.fs.fed.us/trends/

To participate, please review the instructions that follow the sampling calendar.

Special Note:

We cannot thank you enough for your support. We could not fulfill the goals of this study without volunteer assistance.

It is important to appreciate the complexity involved in coordinating such a large scale survey over this study area. To maintain the integrity of the study design, sites missed must be reattempted in accordance with a back-up calendar.

In short, if you request consideration for a certain date and study materials are forwarded, please recognize the importance of your commitment and be prepared to follow through. Again, your support is much appreciated, and needed.
