Any new design features? Are there pics of the shelter anywhere?

i don't know the precise location, but from a description provided by 'Apple' i'm assuming that it must be somewhere near Winespring or perhaps close to the tower. seems kinda close to the road if i've got the location correct.

stayed at winespring last year. if that is where its at, wolf is right, that area definitely doesnt need a shelter. it was trying to recover from overuse when I was there. lots of muddy, treadworn areas in that nook on the trail. its just gonna get worse with a shelter.

just what the AT doesn't need.L Wolf,I agree. It was put 1/2 mile north of the stone tower. If the local paper issues something showing it I'll post it here.If not I will hike down one day soon and get a picture and post it.

Geez. If you don't like shelters or don't wanna stay there, don't.

It's a non issue.

It is indeed a high-use area, and perhaps a shelter will centralize use, i.e. it's better to have ONE frequently used (and trashed) area than having five or six trashed out campsites in the vicinity.

Why and how would putting in a shelter make things worse? Please explain.

And for whom would it make things worse? I mean, Geez, enough already. If you don't feel the need or don't want to stay in shelters, I understand entirely. So don't stay in 'em.

Prett simple.

:-? HA HA HA HA HA HA HA :jump
p.s. i think they should build a covered bridge the entire length of the trail so no-one strays from the trail or gets their feet wet and muddy!!

It is indeed about 1/2 north of the tower and about 1/4 north of the existing campsite listed in the Thru Hikers Companion. I was planning on staying at the campsite last week on my section hike, but they had posted a sign about the shelter. It is the "Nantahala" design, sleeps about 6 and has a covered porch area. It also has a privy, fire pit and several excavated tent platforms, but no bear cables.

Oops, I should have said 1/2 mile north of the tower and 1/4 mile north of the existing campsite. I would place the shelter at about mile 117.4 north of Springer Mtn.

I have posted a pic of the new Wayah Bald Shelter. New shelters actually smell like lumber!

I met a couple of hikers at Wesser Bald who spent the previous night at the new Wayah Bald shelter. They said it is so nice the mice have already moved in.:banana:banana:banana:banana

Are they not made with lumber or are they just sprayed with that fresh hewn lumber scent?;)

I spent the night next to the shelter last wednesday night. i was with a group of boy scouts and left the shelter for others to use but it was nice. we spruced the spring up a bit. it looks real purdy now.:)

I spent the night there shortly after it opened. Nice place - no mice at the time 8)

The best part was the wheel chair accessible privy - ramp, handles and all! Better yet it had water as opposed to the campsite which seemed to be bone dry, like most of the intermediate streams this summer it seems.

Glad to see that the spring was spruced up, it was a bit of a rough walk to get there when we were there.

It'd be great if they used helicopters to take out shelters, not bring more in. I go into the forest to get away from buildings.

Great shelter with Georgia style privy.

Stopped by to take a gander at it last week and use the privy, since the ones on Wayah Bald suck.

Great location.

This shelter does have a few places to pitch tents for those who like to tent near shelters.
