I'm planning on doing a long weekend practice hike on the Pinhoti Trail in Alabama Memorial Day Weekend, anyone ever hiked it, know anything about it? I'm not alowed to ask this question on the "other" website. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, Dave. One of my favorite weekend hikes is starting at the high falls trailhead, hike up what used to be called the Odum Scout Trail to the trail intersection w/ the Pinhoti. Trails intersect on top of the ridge, w/ big (overused) camping area, plenty of trees for hammocking :D , and a reliable spring just off the ridge (i've heard it can be dry - but it never has been when I've been there).... 1st mile or so of the Odum rises about 1,000 feet, so pretty good training hike. Pinhoti ridge hike on to the top of Cheaha is very rocky - so more good training.....

Lots of information here (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=18911) and here (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21995) and here (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21908). Short version: great trail, relatively easy hiking. Likely to be somewhat dry due to the drought in the southeast. Also, when I was out at Cheaha a couple of weeks ago the Pinhoti was closed south of the trail head.
