Any news, good or bad, on Isabel's effect on the MD portion of the AT? I am suppose to hike there coming up soon, and don't want to waste a trip down there only to find an impassable trail.

Thanks!:banana

The only specific report that I have heard is from the PATC forum - ginny reported that the AT south of Turners Gap had a large blowdown blocking the trail within .1 of the trail head - they were out hand clearing the trail but due to an accident were unable to continue past that blowdown - not much info unfortunately. Applying gross generalization to the question I would guess that you would run into 10 to 20 trail blocking blowdowns per mile unless the overseers had already been there to clear - in that case you might run into 2-3 really big blowdowns per mile that are waiting on the chainsaw crews - probably some sections would already be cleared since last weekend was reasonably nice weather but I don't know anything other than what ginny reported - see http://www.hypernews.org/HyperNews/get/trails/PATC/4262/2/1.html for ginny's report

Check TJ's thread (http://whiteblaze.net/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2458) , which quotes from the ATC's summary report.

Aside from Blowdown's the biggest problem is the Tow Path and the bridge into Harper's Ferry. They have rerouted the trail around HF onto the side of US 340, staying on the East side of the Shenandoah and crossing the Potomac from Virginia, skipping West Virginia for those 2 miles.

there is limited camping at Annapolis Rocks and campfires aren't allowed there anymore though some ppl still light em. otherwise the view is fantastic as always!
