View Full Version : My Alternative to Cord on Gaiters

When I use my REI Desert Gaiters with boots, I don’t need the inseam cord, so I removed the cord. However, when I use these gaiters with trail runners, I need something to hold them down. Someone in another thread mentioned using string trimmer line as a rugged cord, but there were some problems attaching the trimmer line. Here is how I did it.

I used 0.080 inch dia. trimmer line. I made a loop in each end of the line and fixed the loop with a metal crimp sleeve. These sleeves are available in fishing tackle shops. The 2.2 mm inside dia. double sleeve crimps will accommodate the 0.080 inch trimmer line. At Boaters World, a pack of 25 sleeves cost $2.25. Although I used a crimping tool specifically made for these types of crimp sleeves, a crimping tool for electrical wire terminals would probably work just as well for this purpose.

I attached the loops to the gaiters using clips; in this case the clips are made for attaching sinkers to bottom fishing rigs. Tackle shops carry all kind of clips that would work. I used what I had on hand at home.

Because the clips are removable, extra made up line sections could be carried as spares to replace worn out ones as required. They weigh next to nothing.

A very ingenious solution, created from commonly available materials. Good work.

Glue a velcro piece to the shoe and another to the gaiter. No need for anything under your foot.
