Could someone get me started on possible trails to make a good 25 to 30 mile loop hike in the Pisgah NF. Good would be defined as reasonably well maintained trails with decent water, views, campsites, etc. I believe one was written up in Backpacker Mag sometimes in the recent past but I cannot locate the issue that contained the article. Any good loop hike suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for any help.

Which Pisgah are you tallking about? The Grandfather district? The Shining Rock district? The Toe River/Black Mountain district?

Many people would probably mention trails in and around Shining Rock, but my pick would be in Pisgah north of Morganton, NC. I'd combine parts of the Greentown(now Mountains to Sea trail), Upper Creek, Harpers Creek and Lost Cove trails. Get the Wilson Creek map at the outfitting store and have at it!

PM me and I'll give you directions to a secret gorge and beautiful rock canyon along Upper Creek off Hiway 181.

Thanks Tipi. I will give it a look. Don't really know much about the area (districts etc). Have done one day hike to Shinning Rock. Currently in the planning stages for a hiking trip for my son and I in October.

The Backpacker mention was of the Art Loeb Trail, but it is a linear trail not a loop. There are other trails in the Shining Rock that fall off the ridges and can be used to build a loop.

I'd recommend the Art Loeb. Not a loop, but plenty of places and intersecting trails to make a loop out of it. Easily made into a 25-30 mile loop.
