Depends on the round. If he hit it 8 times, odds are they were subsonic. The .50 wasn't a magnum, most likely, and since he'd been hunting most of his life, I'm pretty sure he would be used to the weapon.

The whole thing is a shameful hoax. It was a canned hunt, the pig was grown on a farm then let loose for the fat little redneck to kill. The pig could have been taken down with a single shot from a high-powered rifle, and indeed, several adult hunters admit that they were staged all around the hollow where the pig was loosed "for safety in case the pig lunged at the kid". So, the pig could have been killed instantly, humanely. But no. Instead they let a fat little brat chase it around for three fricken hours, shooting it repeatedly, until it collapsed in agony. The photos clearly show at least one gut-shot. What a horrible way to die.

The whole hunt was staged and timed in order to get the little brat into the new Hogzilla movie that (gee what a coincidence) was holding casting calls that very week...

The photos have been independtly verified as having been both staged and digitally altered. Cites: http://www.stinkyjournalism.org/newsdetail.php?id=45 and http://fieldandstream.blogs.com/news/2007/05/breaking_news_1.html

The kid claims to be "proud of his accomplishment". He ought to be ashamed of himself. For the rest of his life, he's gonna be known as the fat kid who tortured an animal, then lied about it's size.

p.s. The 700 lbs of sausage they claim they're getting from the animal's corpse" Like that kid needs any more sausage...

So, no one needs to worry too much about running into a hog that size in the wild.

Now there you go again confusing a good story with the facts. While it was nice to read such a great, warm, down home story my thought was what I would do if that big boar attacked me while camping along the AT. I'm pretty sure that my tent rip stop material wouldn't stop it. I could try to defend myself with my Gerber 2" blade knife. Perhaps I could give it a stout whack with my hiking sticks and yell at it in an authoritative tone. While that's all good I would probably do the same thing I did when I accidentally set up my tent in a smaller boars rutting area. There I was in the middle of the night with a wild boar snorting out side of my tent. I sat up and in my mind I ran through all my options which were the same as above except for flashing my little photon light at it. Instead I fell back to sleep. In the morning the boar was gone.

I don't think it's a fake.

No one is saying that the pig is a fake. Contrary to the claims, 1,000 farm hogs are rather common. A lot of people knew exactly how big he was, since as Rufous pointed out, he was a farm pet just a few days prior to the kid killing him.

What is "fake-ey" is all the exaggerated claims made by the kid and his father. Their original story went something like this: "Powerful and brave young hunter stalks and kills huge vicious feral hog, the most dangerous game animal. Crack-shot 11-year old boy with deadly aim uses huge 50-caliber handgun to singlehandedly bring down monster animal."

What actually happened goes about like this: "Once upon a time a very fat little boy heard about the casting call for the Hogzilla movie and wanted to be in it. So it was arranged for "Fred", a gentle, but very large pet pig to be bought from a local farm and taken to a fenced in "game preserve". Four days after Fred was installed inside the fenced bit of woods, the boy was given a large handgun loaded with drastically weakened ammo, making it incapable of doing more than wounding a large animal. A group of experienced, adult hunters then located Fred ambling about in the woods inside the fenced area and each trained their high-powered rifles at the pig. They then sent the kid after the pig, and stood by while the child blasted away ineffectually with his inadequte weapon, his aim so bad that he actually gut-shot the poor animal. The adults allowed this to go on for three hours, until the pig finally died. Then they did a bit of trick photography to exaggerate the size of the dead pig, created a website complete with advertising and monsterpig merchandise and waited for the fame, dollars and invitation to star in the Hogzilla movie to roll in."

What we've got here are conflicting bizases. The Jamison Family is looking for an angle for their 15 minutes and is possibly blowing the story out of proportion, perhaps wildly out of proportion. But the Stinky Journalism person (yes I read that disjointed poorly executed excuse for journalism...perhaps why she calls it "stinky journalism," because it stinks) has a clear bias as well and constantly misinterpreting sloppy camera work as some conspiracy. Hunters, like fishermen, have a tendency to overstate their accomplishments (the one that got away). Neither source can be trusted. Yes it is clear that the photos do mislead the viewer as to the relative sizes of pigs and people, but the conclusions drawn regarding that are just plain silly, and bringing in a physicist to analyze the photos mathematically is WAAAAY over the top.

This is a tempest in a teapot.

Hunters, like fishermen, have a tendency to overstate their accomplishments (the one that got away).

There is exaggeration. Then there's outright fraud and blatant lying. It was bad enough that the story just broke about the "monster feral hog" actually being a gentle pet pig (there is NO WAY the father didn't know that, since he PAID for the canned hunt and the pig was bought from its owners just four days prior).

But then the kid really shot himself in the foot today by posing with the skull of the "giant hog". The boy easily holds the skill in his hands, the skull is narrower than the kid's torso. A hunting blogger posted a comparison of the relative size of the skull/boy with the original pic that tries to make the pig's head seem the size of a wheelbarrow.

Pig Was a Monster, but He Wasn't Wild

AP Updated:2007-06-02 00:06:37

FRUITHURST, Ala. (June 2) - The huge hog that became known as "Monster Pig" after being hunted and killed by an 11-year-old boy had another name: Fred. The not-so-wild pig had been raised on an Alabama farm and was sold to the Lost Creek Plantation just four days before it was shot there in a 150-acre fenced area, the animal's former owner said.

In either case that is still one big pig!

What they didn't know was that it was going to be used in a "hunt" The responsible adult supervising his kid let him over a three hour "hunt" pump 9 rounds into the animal before it finally died. These scumbags should all be flogged. I was taught to make your kill clean and quick, under NO circumstances would you let ANY animal suffer. You know what I find really weird (and also more evidence that the Stone family can't seem to tell the truth about anything)...If you go to monsterpig.com, the father, in his long rant trying to weasel out of the situation, says that the pig:

would certainly be unsuitable for slaughter, referring to him being an uncut boar hog."

Apparently, unless they are neutered young, somehow the testosterone or something makes their meat inedible, or at least, unpleasant to eat.

I have no idea what's going on with some of the people responding to this thread. TOW is obviously just hamming up some kind of jokey-troll-ey thing, I don't really get the joke though.

Anyway, Fred's owners were quoted as saying the pig played with their grandkids and that their understanding that they were selling him to Lost Creek "for breeding purposes" but they understood that once his breeding career was over, he "might be hunted". They had NO IDEA he was bought specifically for the 11-year old to torture and murder just four days after he left their farm.

A hunting blogger posted a comparison of the relative size of the skull/boy with the original pic that tries to make the pig's head seem the size of a wheelbarrow.

the pig was a pet, it was raised as a pet, it played with kids, it was a part of a family who sold it for breeding purposes. They knew eventually that it would be used for bacon and sausage. I choose no longer to hunt but I have no problems with responsible hunters. It's AH's like those that give all hunters a bad rap.
oh horsecrap..............were you around back in the early days of america when my ancestors were killing the buffalo? sometimes they would stampede them off of cliffs so that they would break a leg or two and then they would jump into the ravine with them and butcher them alive..........as far as that goes do you think all animals that are predators kill fair and square?

Yea me too. In #56, he's aping the stupid southern redneck stereotype, okay, fine. Kinda juvenile but whatever. But then calling whatever it was "hog slop"...I don't get it either. It's not really funny, just kind of a waste of board space. Dunno...
