I feel so left out.

I just broke the 2,000 post barrier and I'm not even Spam-worthy?

I am so depressed. Spammers won't even talk to me.

I'll talk to you. Though I'm more fond of Virginia Ham flavored Treet, it being a much tastier version, IMO.

You fry up a few slices of that in a pot on the trail, put some sharp cheese on it on the last flip, put it between bagel halves, and you have a trail meal that cures homesickness.

I'm suffering from a different kind of homesickness right now. I'm supposed to lay down at least 12 hours per day between now and the 25th--my surgery day. I'm getting sick of not hiking. Even though I spend a little less than half my time on the trail when things are working good, I haven't been hiking for two weeks, and it'll be about three more before I can again.

I really feel like the trail* is my home, and I miss it.

Wrong thread? Big deal. Welcome to Whiteblaze. :)

This is waay to common now. My site is always being spidered by bots looking for ways to contact people, steal emails, and get data. I'm constantly updating our ban settings to stop these guys in their tracks.

It's not a person (usually) that’s doing it. It's just a program that queries google for certain terms and craws the results.

So far, we have been able to avoid it, but it's only a matter of time.

I didn't get one - apparently they know to avoid the Admins somehow. But I am about to ban that IP.

Banning the IP usually does nothing.....

Spammers usually own a range of addresses and the bots they use are usually spyware attached to someone else's computer running in the background.

Just FYI......

Actually I have found that banning a username does even less because they can come from the same computer with another ID or another computer. What I have found is these sorts of attacks come from a narrow range of IPs so you can ban a string of them most times without affecting users if you check and cross reference them. In this case there were two unique IPs that were reported on that other link which seem to not have anyone else comming in from that are users - so it is an easy painless way to prohibit some activity. On our last hacker attack the IPs were from a narrow group of IPs out of Saudi Arabia - so banning all those was painless and stopped them cold and quick since they were comming on from those locations using Admin and Moderator's usernames. In that case IP banning is the best way to go because you cannot have Troll ban himself.

Well maybe - you cannot ignore Admins, so I don't know if an admin can ignore himself.

There really is an ignor button? Where is it?

Choose 'public profile' from the menu that drops down after clicking on the offender's username and choose, for example,"Add fehchet to Your Ignore List (http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/profile.php?do=addlist&userlist=ignore&u=3146)" at the top middle right of the page.

Just click on the person's name and view their profile. Third choice to the right is add this person to the ignore list.

I highly encorage people to try that - as well as opting out of certain areas that annoy them if they are subscribed to them. Some of our regulars have found this to save them from dealing with some people that they would otherwise constantly bicker with.
