Hey trailplace.com (http://trailplace.com) is back in buisness. It could use support. If I remember correctly this was the place to be years ago. No reason it couldn't be the biggest board to date. All the reason's wingfoot believes in hiking the trail are ours too ........... we just don't understand the messenger. So regardless help him out sending his message to the newcomers. His site is one of the first to be seen in a search engine, so get over there and help the newcomers.

You got a good point there, but wingfoot knows how to present the information the way it needs to be seen.

When it comes to presetation wingfoot nows what hes doing. It takes a hiker 20 years to find this site, when it only takes the punch of a button on any search engine to find trailplace. So is the answer a site that gets more hits, or what its all so general about .......... like helping people out.

Dan did really nothing wrong, he had vision on what newcomers should be subjected to and he stuck to it. Now if you all raised kids you know you would trust Dan. The values Dan sticks to are the same that Warren, Jack and most would, but even me would say screw a Bush. Think about it did the idea of the trail get so far away that sombody can't devote their life to it in the manner they want with out christ

what I meant, we all need to help the newcomers out, no matter where or when.

Not true. When you sign up you agree that certain topics that Dan feels strongly about will not be discussed. You violate those agreed upon rules and your post gets zapped. Nothing wrong with that.

Posts get deleted here too. The admins don't make a big deal out of it, but a lot of 3:00 a.m. posts that are clearly inappropriate are deleted as soon as the admins read them.

Sometimes you have to look hard to find the best places on the 'net (or along the AT). It is a fact of life. The first link you get from google isn't always the best. Furthermore, this site isn't a business (Just ask AT Troll how much he makes from this site :D). Trail Place is. There are plenty of ways to get your site "noticed" online if you really want it to. And that, is exactly what Wingfoot has done. His site wasn't even open 2 months ago.

Consider WhiteBlaze the off-trail berry patch of online AT news. It is worth the hike. And its location is spread by word of mouth.

This site is easy to find if you know what you are looking for and know how to use a search engine. On google type in "appalachian trail" +forum and whiteblaze is the 3rd site listed.

10-13-2003, 09:48
How many folks would actually add "forum" to their search criteria? Not many. Enter Appalachian Trail. WhiteBlaze isn't on the first 3 pages. Trail Place is the 5th entry (3rd unique hostname).

And don't under estimate the fact that Trail Place is a business. I'm sure the URL is mentioned several times in his book. Which, I'm told, is the "most popular" and "the only book you'll need" on the trail.

I donít really know why WhiteBlaze does not come up when you do a search on google for ďappalachian trailĒ. I have gone into the software and made some changes that I think will help. I had some ideas that may change this and did the proper corrections.

I am not sure how Google rates its searches. I thought it listed the most hit sights first. If that is the case I know WhiteBlaze should be very close to the top. The next question is how Google counts the hits off the sites like Trailplace and Whiteblaze to know how to rate them. If it is counting from you clicking on one of the links that shows up in your search results then it can not accurately reflect how many times the site gets hit on each day due to the fact that most people donít go through Google to get to these sites.

I looked on the Google site and it had no place that explained any of this. So if someone knows how fill me in.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I really donít feel like I have to explain any of the following but I will anyway.

As for deleting messages on WhiteBlaze. I admit I have done that. When the messages get rude and can be offensive to others I have started deleting them. If you look at the post on the site you can see that there is a lot that is left up that probably still should not be there. I donít want to be like other site owners and only let things be left posted in the forums that I think should be. But it is a site for all. It is not my site. It is your site. I just maintain it.

On the comment of banning. I have never banned anyone form WhiteBlaze. I have only limited access to one user that has been on this site in the whole time I have taken care of it. That was last week. It does worry me that we may get some people on here just trying to cause trouble though. The site was created to bring the Appalachian Trail community and enthusiasts together. I donít want to have people logging on just to be rude and offensive and start turning other people away. You have to remember that most of the new users that log onto WhiteBlaze log on to learn and get advice about hiking the AT. If you have a new user log on and they see rude comments and things of that nature they are not going to want to come back to this site. I hope you can relate to what I am trying to say here.

This is a cross-post from trailforums.com seeing as how the same person posted both messages.

--------------------

If your spelling and usage of poor grammar is indicative of the intelligence level of the average visitor to the wingblister site, those of us with IQ's higher than 70 would be better served by not going there.

In any case, to answer your question(?)

The first sites that come up in a google search are:
www.fred.net/kathy/at.html
www.appalachiantrail.org/
www.nps.gov/appa/

Hotbot yeilds:
www.fred.net/kathy/at.html
www.appalachiantrail.org/
www.atconf.org/

Lycos has this to say;
www.fred.net/kathy/at.html
www.atconf.org/
www.nps.gov/appa/

As you can tell, the search results are not an indicator of a quality site.

Wingfoot is an insecure child who suffers from a narcissistic, selfish, conceited dementia.

Spelling just might be the answer. If you miss-spell "appalachian trail" as " appalachain trail", wingfoot's site is the 3rd one listed on google.

Troll, on more than one ocassion I've seen messages at 6:00 that were deleted within the next couple of hours. These messages, as you and Rock know, have gone waaay past rude and offensive -- they have been racist, homophobic, directed at Trail personalities at times, and filled with language that no one cares to read.

Anyone that criticizes you or Rock for deleting such messages "because of censorship" or other such nonsense probably hasn't read them and doesn't know what they're talking about.

I went to trailplace one. And on one of my posts i just mentioned that one day i would like to do the triple crown - complete all three of the major hikes in the US. Wingfoot sent me a message letting me know I was breaking the rules (the triple crown is officially unrecognized by him and his site) and that if i continued I would be banned from the site.

????!!!!!

Sure - he has a right to do it. It's his site. But I left and never went back.

I prefer this forum b/c there's no officially sanctioned "right" answer to everything. If you already accept everythning Wingfoot says in his list of rules as gospel, there really is no need for a forum - everyone is in agreement already on everything.

I took a look at his site because some of the pro, or sympathetic, drug comments on this site rubbed me the wrong way. However, i'd rather participate in a forum where I disagree with people than a forum where dissent is not tolerated.

So, I won't be going back to trailplace.com anytime soon.

Don't know why people want to talk about personalities rather than the trail. But if you're going to criticize Trailplace at least be honest about it.

You registered 8/14 and made 6 posts thru 8/27. And you visited there TODAY 15 minutes ago.

So if its sooo bad why the return visit?

From trailplace: There are currently 3 users and 14 guests online, for a total of 17 people online. Most ever online was 32 on 9-22-2003 at 9:26 PM.

The ATC has an information package that it sends to prospective thru-hikers. The ATC recommends Warren Doyle's ATI, ALDHA's Gathering, and the at-l's RUCK to 'newcomers'. All topics BANNED by Wingfoot on TrailPlace. Similar TrailPlace propaganda has been posted on both TrailJournals and WhiteBlaze - although both are BANNED from being mentioned on TrailPlace.

And as far as getting to the top of the web searches - you can embed code (several thousand mentions of 'Appalachian Trail' on your splash page), or simply pay (Google, Lycos) to be placed higher. 'Hits' and web counters are easily faked just by running a script or refresh-bot. I've always said that Wingy is an excellent webmaster.

Come on, Max.. I think it's pretty obvious that the gist of Dionalaniz's post is that he no longer contributes to trailplace because he felt he was censored unreasonably. Did you really think the point of his post was simply to say that he has never since pointed his browser to that site..?

Your detective work and accusation of dishonesty just comes off as mean and out of left field..

Dionalaniz's post simply describes an experience on the trailplace forum that has also happened to others. It seems that most folks who frequent this forum recognize that Wingfoot is indeed an expert on long distance hiking and the popularity of his guide speaks for itself. His forum is ďhisĒ forum and if he wants to exercise strict control over forum topics then that is right. However, this strict control and the frequency in which he exercises his power of deletion has obviously put off some people, including me. And Iím not talking about offensive or harassing posts. A responsible forum moderator should step in and remove those.

Absolutely. Thats what he said.

I don't care who goes or doesn't go to Trailplace. The point is that by lying dionalaniz totally invalidated the point he was trying to make. Regardless of how one may feel about Wingfoot (and lets face it, most of the information about him is 2nd hand stuff circulated on the internet by people who have never met him) the fact is that his website is a valuable resource for those looking for information about section or thru hiking the trail. dionalaniz proved that point by continuing to visit Trailplace despite his personal feelings about the webmaster and how the site is administered.

By the way, no great detective work was involved. I just happened to be at Trailplace the same time he was and recognized the name.

One last point; except to mention his handbook, there is no really no reason to talk about Wingfoot or any personalities on this site. I will never start a thread about any individual person, however, I will step in when inaccuracies or lies are spread.

dude - max patch. you're being totally unreasonable and you know it. This post came up and other posts talking about google searches and what comes up when one type "appalachian trail" into google. So, yes - i clicked the trailplace link that happened to come up in google or on this site.

By saying that i'm "lying" about returning to his site you're just digging yourself in a hole. I did, and will still visit trailplace for the following reason:

1. See if wingfoot has added any new hilarious rules as to what constitutes properly hiking the A.T. I do enjoy reading his "commandments" of A.T. hiking and his image of himself as Moses coming down from the mountains with his commandments is very funny. I like reading his commandments and seeing him all alone in the prison of his commandments.

2. Marvel at the paucity of activity on his site and ruminate on its cause - viewing himself as the A.T. Moses.

3. I'm bored as **** at work cause i'm leaving on my thru-hike in 3 weeks and i'll look at just about any non-porn internet site while at work to wile away the time.

Clearly, in my previous I was meaning "I will not go back to his site as either a meaningful contributor or a genuinely interested listener". But thanks max patch for showing to all here *EXACTLY* why I will not be visiting trailplace in any capacity other than to observe the lunatic AT Moses preaching on the side of the road.

Oh - and wingfoot has a kick ass trail guide. I'm definitely using it on my upcoming thru-hike.

Google lists site by relavant links of other sites of the same nature. Meaning the more sites that link to yours the better the placement. Also Google has problems reading the scripts on the frontpage portal since the html with "Appalachian Trail" is not on the opening page and in a php file instead. Putting Appalachian Trail ahead of WhiteBlaze in the title bar is a good idea also.

To find out more about site optimazation go to Zeal.Com and become a member, you will have to pass a site optimazation test before becoming a member. The test alone is a good education and not easy.

To charachter assasian someone else, shows poor charachter of yourself. Its even worse when done to someone that has done nothing wrong to you.

dionalaniz

There is no character assassination going on here. All I did is mention a factual experience I had on Wingfoot's site. I talked about a certain subject on his site (triple crown) and was informed that if i talked about this subject or any other subject on a long list of unsanctioned topics I would not be allowed to participate in the forum.

No one is saying Wingfoot doesn't have a right to set up a website and rule over his kingdom however he wants. But when he rules his kingdom with an iron fist intolerant of any dissent whatsoever he should not be surprised when people leave his kingdom muttering "man, that guy is pretty lame. he needs to chill out".

I don't know anything about the guy personally. He may be a great guy. And, for sure, he's got the best and most convenient AT guidebook on the market no doubt. But he does rule his forum with the iron fist of a dictator who tolerates no difference of opinion.

Dressing as StevieRay, he posted this gem in the "Moose" thread in the wildlife folder yesterday:
