Im doing it! Im thruhiking March 2009. Just told friends and family and there reaction was " Why would you want to walk from Georgia to Maine?"
A friend said, "so you are going to be living in your tent for 5 months?":banana

Lowspark,
Thats awesome. I just got turned on to the true nature of the AT and I have set a date to do it by no later than the season of 2010.
I am curently planning my first section hike to "break myself in" and shake out the bugs (being new at this, I have a lot of bugs to shake!).
Hope to see you on the trail someday.
Go for it!
Marta/Five-Leaf
Congratulations on the decision. Let the planning begin!

My family is flooding my email. Just small comments like "WHAT?"

I just posted my response to that sort of comment over on the thread from the wannabe hiker. Works for me if not overused - maybe you can get away with it too.
Much madness is divinest sense To a discerning eye;
Much sense the starkest madness.
’T is the majority In this, as all, prevails.
Assent, and you are sane;
Demur,—you ’re straightway dangerous,
And handled with a chain.
Enjoy the madness...you'll love the trail!

When I mentioned to my kids that I want to thru-hike, may daughter asked me why I would want to be voluntarily homeless for 6 months.

My mom just emailed, "Are you ever going to come home or just live on the AT?"

Nice! My familly and friends where the same way, I have lived in my tent for about 4 months now and I still get the occasonal "I can't beleive you live in a tent"
I decided to do the trail a few months ago and I'm so pumped to get there, I doubt I could wait 2 years to do something I would burst of excitment.
Good luck and happy planning.

I`m a bit confused..Your trail journal talks about you starting a thru-hike earlier this year...I would think your friends and family would be accepting that you are a serious hiker by now..Or did I misunderstand something?
