Search breakfast food. Cruising granola. Mix the wet separte from the dry, increase the coconut and nuts. Don't cook quite so long.

Peanuts work well as a budget nut, but walnuts are tastier.

If you can buy the ingedients at a health food (bulk) store it is quite cheap.

Too high octane for every day life, for me.

I make a 3x batch so I can use the whole can of milk.

I'm on the road and don't have my recipes with me BUT I have modified my origional which called for honey..nuts..raisens etc. and now use molasses for extra nutrition and also use sunflower seeds because of the added fat...along with wheatgerm..

Here's my granola recipe, which I got somewhere on the internet. It uses a dehydrator, but you could probably do it in an oven at low temperatures (not to brag or anything since I didn't come up with the recipe, but everyone I shared this with on the trail thought it was really yummy).

Ingredients:
½ cup honey
½ cup hot water
½ cup canola oil
2 tsp vanilla
5 cups quick oats
3 Tbsp powdered milk (or powdered soymilk)

Instructions:
Mix above ingredients then add in 1 cup of something else: dried fruit, sunflower seeds, coconut, etc.
Spread on parchment paper to about ½” thick.
Dehydrate at 145° for 2+ hours. Done when dry and slightly crisp on the outside. It should come off the tray in chunks.

I like this easy recipe found at recipezaar; add dried fruit and nuts of your choice the last few minutes of baking (raisins, dates and pecans are very good).

GRANOLA
Ingredients
3 cups rolled oats
1 cup slivered almonds
1 cup unsalted whole cashews (optional)
3/4 cup shredded sweet coconut
1/4 cup + 2 tbsp. dark brown sugar
1/4 cup + 2 tbsp. maple syrup
1/4 cup veggie oil (we use canola)
3/4 tsp. salt
1 cup raisins (or craisins) (either are optional)

Directions
Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Combine oats, nuts, coconut & brown sugar in a large mixing bowl.
In a separate bowl, combine syrup, oil & salt.
Combine both mixtures and pour onto 2 sheet pans (we line our pans with parchment paper so the mix doesn't stick).
Bake for 2 to 2-1/2 hrs, stirring every 30 minutes for uniform color. Bake until crunchy & thoroughly dry.
Stir in raisins or craisins (if desired) once completely cooled.
Serve by itself or with milk. Or use it to top yogurt, ice cream or over fresh fruit.
I can't advise as to its shelf-life as it gets consumed pretty quickly in our household.
Enjoy! :D

Scroll down a page or two to Nora Ann'a Homemade Granola. Great stuff. This is Dragonfly's recipe, so I'm somewhat biased because I eat it almost every day.
