Hello All,
My friend was able to give me a helping hand with my NOBO 2004 thru-hike by getting me a pair of thermal Long Johns, a long sleeve base layer top, socks and also a hat.
The problem is that the top and long johns are made of cotton. I am aware that cotton is not recommended but as they were free I feel inclined to use them.
Would it be unadvisable to use them? Or does anyone find that cotton is ok to use?

Thank your friend, them sell them on eBay. Cotton, once wet, retains absolutely NO warming properties and it takes forever to get them dry again. Cotton is worse than useless, it can be seriously detrimental.

Once cotton anything gets wet, and it will, it is not only completely and utterly useless but it weighs a lot. Instead of cotton just put a large rock in your pack, it is the same thing.

Figured these would be the responses.
They're freebies anyway so have no value, still I'm gonna feel a bit lame telling him they're useless...oh well at least I can perhaps wear them to bed in England :)

If the longjohns are 100% cotton, then I wouldn't take them. But, if they were a blend, something like 50-50, then you could probably get away with wearing them on the trail.

When my friend ordered them for me he thought they weren't cotton. It's because they're a Fire Resistant cotton (He's a Gas Man) and don't feel like the usual stuff. Never mind I'll have to shell out a few of my hard earnt English Pounds instead.

Possibly. I'll ask him cos only a fool passes up something for free.
