Do you guys think that campsites in the Smokies would be available in oh say 2 or 3 weeks from now? I've been wanting to go all summer and I start school August 20th. I'm trying to get a friend to go with me for 3 days or so and I'm just curious if I could get a permit this close.

From a novices point of view, it depends on where you go and how soon you try to get a permit. I went up Wolf Ridge Trail to Gregory Bald (back down Long Hungry Ridge) a couple of weekends ago and there was plenty of space at both Sheeps Pen CS and CS 95 (or was it 92).
The popular sheltered sites (Ice Water, LeConte) seem to stay pretty busy. When you about a permit, they can tell you about availbility.

just go to a site that doesnt need a permit, then you won't have to worry about getting one

I thought you had to have a permit for every campsite in the smokies?

Permits are required at all campsites - however, some sites do not require a resevation.

Just keep an eye on the Smokies website for closings and water availibility.I had reservations for Campsite #24 last weekend and it was closed due to bear activity.Luckily there was a space at CS #23.Have a backup plan just in case.:sun

I would call the Back Country Office today and ask them about availability rather than ask this forum. It's all a crap shoop as to availability so why not go to the ones who know for sure.

You can get their phone number by going to the link above and navigating to back Country. You can also call the main office number and they can transfer you.

Thanks for the help. I'll find out this weekend if I'm even going or not. So I'll just have to wait and see.
