Let's face it, Nalgene bottles are uber trendy now.

Colleges sell them with their logo...
You get as schwag at seminars, projects, meetings, etc...
With some duct tape and a 'biner, you get that nice Earthy-Crunchy dirt bag climber look going...

Somehow $10 bottles that are indestructible have become both a a MUST HAVE item to haul water AND a fashion accessory.

I present the following Nalgene bottle (http://store.theonion.com/i-will-never-take-this-camping-water-bottle-p-110.html) that is very truthful. Perfect for the next time you find your eyes glazing over while looking at a power point presentation, in the coffee shop or hanging out at the Student union. Use this bottle with pride...and truthfulness. ;)

(I now have FOUR Nalgne bottles that I have yet to pay for... But I just may buy this one. :D)

Not quite the same, but one of my freebie naglene's does have a STUPID NALGENE STICKER (http://www.lowriderpress.com/pictures/nalgeneblack.gif) on it. Seriously. That's what it says. :)

Now, Why would anyone in their right mind take a Hummer out on a dirt road? That would be totally reckless and destroy the resale value.:banana

Whatever happened to that couple who were on here earlier this year saying they were thru-hiking "to save the chimps from animal experimentation". And they were taking bottles made by Nalgene...who manufacture animal testing equipment, like this one:

http://www.rmad.org/nalgene.html

Anyone ever see them on the trail?

The animal testing issue is a difficult debate. There are so many items I dissagree with that are tested (like makeup), but there are a lot of other products like pharmaceuticals that do need testing (not talking about viagra either). It's just difficult to ban a company like it was being suggested in the link www.RMAD.org/nalgene.html

I did not think it had to be said that they are too heavy. What's next, do I have to say that the AT is blazed with white rectangles too? :)

I thought the Onion Nalgene bottles were just an amusing item..at least to me.... (I'm a gatorade man myself (http://www.pmags.com/joomla/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=50&Itemid=33))

Thankyou, Overpass, for that link. I had no idea. I'll try to find out what Nalgene's stance on animal testing is now.

Yes, you can boycott a company - and let them know why. I vote with my dollar, to the best of my ability. Everytime I go to buy seafood, I ask where it came from. If enough people walk out, because they carry Canadian seafood, the company will stop carrying Canadian seafood. If enough people complain to Nike, they'll drop that dog-fighting looser. I like Annie's Mac & Cheese, and Cheddar Bunnies. :D

Businesses are in the business of making money. There is a LOT of money in research and drugs. Where I lived in Tampa, there were "death vans" that roamed the neighborhood looking for pets to steal that people would leave unattended in their yard. He tried to take my bunny, because he didn't see me only a few feet away. They go out looking for what the testing facillities need, because shelters have cracked down on adoption requirements, and upped their fees. "Free pets" are an excellent source for labs, as well. The labs claim they have no knowledge of where the animals come from. Even if you want to give your pet to a good home, put a decent price in the newspaper ad to discourage lab predators.

The animal testing issue isn't difficult, it's senseless. I'm not just saying that, because I love animals. Animals are not humans. Scientists admit that testing on an animal is absolutely no proof on how the substance will act on a human, but they do it in order to satisfy requirements for testing on humans. If you've been in the corporate world, you know the phrase, "It doesn't have to make sense; it's policy." Even though it isn't effective, it is expected to test on animals, before testing on people - hence the huge demand.

Outside the LD hiking community, Nalgene bottles are definitely the must have item. Having said that, I know few thru-hikers who use them....

6 oz and $10+ for a bottle that holds fricken water does not make sense to me as well. Unless it is one with a snarky comment on the side. ;)

I just called the company, and they stopped selling the animal testing devices last year. Apparently, they got a lot of complaints! :banana So, if you are going to the mall in your Hummer, don't forget your trusty Nalgene bottle - made right in the U.S. of A.!

Sweet! I love the Christmas light idea.

Nean brings about another point on why to not buy a Nalgene: You always seem to find them on the trails!

I gotta make it down to Pagosah and stop in to see Casa Nean...

I have 2 of them... So sad! I actually paid for one (on the clearance rack tho!) because it was covered in snow flakes. Yea, flakes! Its the theme I decorate with for the holidays... silver and white snow flakes. I just had to have it. The other was a "free with purchase" from some online store... Now I use it as a repository for all the gear decals that get shipped with my purchases... It stays home or at the farm or in the car, but thats about it!

I have to admit to buying 2 nalgenes when I first started hiking. Now, I use a 2 liter platy and a Gatorade bottles (or whatever else is handy). the one thing I find Nalgenes useful for is to display funky stickers and drink beer at Trail Days.

On the subject, what is a good alternative for someone that like to pour boiling hot water for making tea and hike while drinking it? I'm serious. I'm not saying nalgene bottles are good for this either, as I wonder about what they say about the plastic especially at high temperatures. There are aluminum flasks with insulation, but they are hot too, and sometimes hard to clean out. What I am looking for is something the same size as a 1 litre Nalgene Bottle, that can handle boiling hot water ( I use a Kelly Kettle ), that you can drink while moving, and handle while hot. Also, half the weight of a Nalgene Bottle would be really nice.

Also, tips on adding skim milk powder to boiling hot tea without separating the skim milk into curds and whey. I think the answer is to put 750ml into the Kelly Kettle to boil, as that is about what it holds, and use the other 250ml to make the skim milk, but then how do you steep the tea at 212F? Second container I guess. So then once I mix them I am down to about 170F or so, which might go into a PET without shrinking it. So what do I steep the tea in? Same pot as for my oatmeal perhaps. But then what if I want tea and oatmeal at the same time? Make the tea first I suppose. OK, I've got it. Sorry to bother you.

I usually hike around w/ 5 lbs of camera equipment anyway; what's another couple of ounces?

Keeps me in shape baby!

Steaming hot (NOT BOILING) water works fine in a Gatorade bottle.

If you are winter camping then a Nalgene bottle makes more sense as Gatorade bottles and boiling water don't go together too well.

I doubt most people who carry the bottles are in a snow cave, though. ;)

Firstly - I have two dogs and absolutely cherish them. I support a bunch of animal rights groups, but I am not sure you completely got my point.

Testing on animals and humans for senseless purpopes is horrible and inhumane. Where I struggle and don't see the world as black and white is testing that really serves humanity, wether it's for a drug to help animals or help humans. Again we're not talking about Viagra or eye makup, we're talking about a pharmaceutical that will save your loved one's life someday.

That is where I struggle with boycotting a company that makes lab equipment. I would agree with a boycot of makeup products and other niceties that use animals for testing. That makes sense, but not the company that manufactures equipment that is used in vital capacities.

I love that one. The best Nalgene question by a non hiker is why is there duct tape wrapped around your bottle? I simply tell them it broke in half and i taped it back together it seems to rattle them.

You shouldn't be annoyed as long as it is filled with a good white wine chilled to exactly 42*
BTW, I ordered 5 of them, couldn't believe the great price!:banana

Seriously, they are heavy but I always carry 1 with me in cold weather. They can handle boiling liquids and are a very good leak proof "warmer" in your sleeping bag on a cold night.

Crazy Legs
08-16-2007, 08:16
I love my Nalgene bottle. For the simple fact that I can boil water and start off the morning with a hot beverage. Tea is my preference, and it really gets me going. You can't put boiling water in a camel bak, else I would use that. I've carried my nalgene bottle on long sections of the PCT, and many other extended hikes, and will carry them on a week long hike this fall on the AT. TOO heavy--what ever. My pack, with food and water, weighs in at 30 lbs. No biggee to me. Not even close. I often forget I have it on. I'm 6'2", 190lbs, and average 20+/day. I guess that's why they call me crazy legs. I carry the gear that works for me, and nothing else. A Nalgene bottle definatly works for me. I super enjoy hot tea in the morning!!

As for the "trendyness" of these bottles...well, a lot of folks are wanna-be hikers, as is true with most any sport. I laugh when I see someone wearing a football players jersey that they paid $100 or more for. I see that a lot too. Anyway, I don't blame the wanna-be types. I wanna hike, and I do - often. I carry my Nalgene bottles, and I enjoy my hikes immensly.
