Kilts are much like trench coats. As far as the design goes, I think a kilt should be as formal or casual or utilitarian or primitive as you wish it to be, and out of whatever material you choose. When and where to wear them depends on time, place, and occassion. Both Kilts and trench coats can have a stigma about what might be worn underneath them. People need to get over this. Of course it doesn't help if some men go around in kilts and trench coats deliberately flashing people or being inappropriately provocative. Spoils it for the rest of us. There is nothing wrong with making a statement. But it should be a strong yet discrete statement, that makes people feel more comfortable having you around, not less comfortable.
Kilts can be excellent for hiking, depending on the material and the climate.
My preference is primitive kilts, and ponchos, and capes, and robes, and such.

my friends been wearing the utlikilt for years and I find him oddly attractive in it...he says it's very liberating for day to day wear.
But he also tends to get drunk at the bar and flash the people he knows

I didn't catch his name, but he was hiking with Captain Hook and Praying Mantis. I've considered a kilt, but I wouldn't be caught dead in this!

However:
I am not a fan of Utilikilts. They are OK, but I find them a bit too heavy to wear & they just look heavy with all the huge pockets. I do like the slash pocket, & maybe 2 small rear pockets would be nice, cause there are times that my sporran / belt pack dosn't do the job. (I have 2 sporrans for dress & 1 belt pack for hiking or just about town.)
On the other hand, those I know that have them, love the utilikilt, so,,,,,
My 5 kilts are homemade, I plan on buying a sportkilt someday.

Where did you find a pattern for these homemade kilts? I've seen some in 'costume' departments of sewing patterns but did you have to alter them for a hiking kilt in any way?
