How are the campsites at the Cheese Factory campsite below Tray Mountain?
They are wide open, level, grassy, 50 yards from water; but the ones on top of Tray are better.
The hike up is worth it.

The cheese factory campsite is a grassy clearing with a fire ring and multiple level campsites fairly close together.
Water is from a nice spring with a stone wall, go down a short blue-blazed trail and across a road.

There didn't seem to be any visible ruins of the actual cheese factory.

You can walk past the cheese factory site and never notice it unless you know where you are. Tray shelter is only a little further up the mountain and well worth the extra effort.

IMO it wasn't worth the extra effort.

Camped at the Cheese Factory on a foggy/misty/drizzly night in March, '04. Nice place - I'd do it again.

I camped at the cheese factory in 01 and only stopped for water every year since. I much prefer the views and sunsets higher up. But to each his or her own.

I looked at it in 87, nice & level in spots, but seemed too easy access for the party croud being that close to tray mt rd. Clean site, but it is close to the rd.

I've camped there a few times. The only cheese I remember was getting "cut". :D
Didn't see any cheese, either!

Very true, that's exactly what I did when I hiked south thru there after spending a very cold, windy night up on Tray Mt.

Thanks for all the information. We decided to go ahead and hike to of Tray Mountain Shelter. It was well worth it...the 14.5 miles it took to get there was another story. Slept well!
