I'm planning to get on the trail at I-81 Sat. for a section hike back to Damascus. Any advice as to where to get on the trail around Adkins?

I met a hiker doing the same thing and he parked at the Relax Inn. I do not know what they charge. You should pm SawnieRobertson and go to 'search', type in Atkins.

The Relax Inn did not charge me several years back for parking my car there for 3+ days. It was March or April and they were slow.

I stuffed $10 in the guy's shirt against his will anyway. Goodwill isn't free people.......;)

Bruce..to answer your question literally, the trail comes out on the road almost directly across from the motel if I remember correctly.

digger has it, go to the gas station/convenience store next to the hotel, and look across the street for the blaze to go southbound.

You can park at the motel as the others had said, Although when I was pick up my parents were parked at the far edge of the truck stop. I don't know if this is a viable long term parking spot or not. Have a good trip, thats a great section. Make sure you stay a Thomas Knob if you can. Its one of my favorite shelters.

You want Exit 54 off of I-81, which is actually in the town of Groseclose near the intersection of US-11 and VA-683. The Relax Inn is behind the gas station, and the southbound AT enters a meadow directly across from the Inn and a truck stop right next to it, south and west of the interchange. Here's a map (http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?formtype=address&addtohistory=&address=&city=Groseclose&state=VA&zipcode=&country=US&location=KXne02KBc2coQdoBEzEOOzEY4K5Agsj%2fM1MYvBU sujgwL8u0UikOcvrF6n2ZGNyQv1G5MNeVzzmoCriQMmg%2bBJX n1hHUmyk6sIcsweWhCjU4oMNr25adhQ%3d%3d&ambiguity=1) (click the + button 4 times to zoom in); the AT heads south just below the green '54' box that will appear on the left of the map once you zoom in.
