Georgia to Maine patch

On my 05 thru hike I saw a really nice Georgia to Maine AT patch sewn into some guys pack he said was from the seventies... Why cant they make a patch like this for thru hikers nowadays? I mean about eighty percent hike NOBO anyway.. Could White Blaze make their own patch? Does it have to be issued by the ATC?

Midway Sam-"I have seen it at every outfitter I have been at along the trail..."That patch says "Maine to Georgia". I took the question to be about a patch that says "Georgia To Maine", but I could be wrong.

I am curious about this as well. I do embroidery. I used a hiking stock design and just added trail names on the bottom on some of my things. If I was to do something like that with AT trail on it am I infringing on ATC's rights
