I thought the lowest point on the AT was the Bear Mountain Bridge over the Hudson River at 800 feet.

The AT where it crosses I-70 in Maryland is lower than 1200 feet.

Florida... 345 ft.

You can see my trip report from another low high point here. I am partial to this one as it my home state. 812 feet. Oh yes!!!

I suspect both are better than Delaware's high point of Ebright Azimuth (wonderful name). 448 ft and next to a trailer park.

Mags, if we're talking about the entire US, then of course the lowest point would be Death Valley in California at over 200 feet below sea level.

the LOWEST *HIGHEST* point. So it would be Florida..

I don't think he asked for the overall lowest point?

Incidentally, the lowest point inthe US (Death Valley) and highest point inthe lower-48 (Whitney) are in the same county and is the goal of the Badwater ultra. (http://www.badwater.com/)

Sorry, I'm at work and didn't read the whole question. You are correct that the state with the lowest high point is Florida.

Obviously not a coastal state. My guess is Colorado. Suppose it could be Montana - nah, that's too big.

which state uses the most duct tape? I heard this on the trail this year. I can't verify the facts, and I have no clue regarding its usage. Any insight?

The Bridge is actually more like 130 feet. The zoo next door is the official low point at 124. See here: http://www.appalachiantrail.org/site/c.jkLXJ8MQKtH/b.773195/k.DF76/New_York.htm

Heh... I don't believe so.

It is within spitting distance of Georgia though. Kind of a Mickey Mouse high point one way or another..no? :)

Just for grins I found this little statement :D

A highpointer will go anywhere these days...even Florida! No, Space Mountain is not the highest mountain in Florida, although it is the most expensive!

I don't agree with how they came up with that but, whatever. There are several methods for determining the location of the eastern and western extremes of the United States.

There are several methods for determining the location of the eastern and western extremes of the United States so it is clear that there are two right answers. The common sense reckoning of the terms is by longitude, relative to the geographic center of the country.

But, by cartographical convention, the Prime Meridian running through Greenwich, England is the least eastern and least western place in the world. It is defined as 0 degrees longitude. The 180th meridian, on the opposite side of the globe represents the absolute limit of how far east or west one can travel, from a cartographical perspective. Anything exactly on the 180th meridian is neither east nor west; but take a single step to either side and one is at 179+ degrees east or 179+ degrees west, the highest achievable numbers. By this mode of reckoning, the most eastern and western spots in the US are both in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska.

However, if one takes the view that the easternmost place is where the day first begins, and the westernmost is where the day last ends, then the International Date Line is the defining limit for what is most eastern or western. In a new year, the earliest US sunrise takes place on Wake Island. Less than an hour earlier, the sun also rose over Attu Island, Alaska but for the day before.

On the other hand, if one defines what is most eastern and most western by which direction one must travel to reach a given point over the shortest distance, then Point Udall in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Udall Point, Guam, are the easternmost and westernmost points, respectively. While the world is round, and any point can be reached by traveling either east or west, it is always more direct to head east to reach Point Udall , when traveling from any other spot in the U.S. Likewise, there is not a single point in the United States from which heading east is a shorter route to Udall Point, Guam, than heading west would be, even accounting for circumpolar routes. This holds true because all U.S. territory is spread across less than 180 degrees of longitude.

The lowest highest point. The lowest highest point. The lowest highest point. hich one is it?Johnny

Huh?

Clingmans Dome the highest point on the A.T.!

At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is Great Smoky Mountains National Park's highest point. It is the highest point in Tennessee, and the second highest point east of the Mississippi. Only North Carolina's Mt. Mitchell (6,684 feet) rises higher. (not on the A.T....but, you can spot it from Clingmans'!):D

Would that be Space Mtn? :D

Sand Mountain near Bartow, FL used to be the highest point but they tore it down to reclaim the phosphate. Man, we'd take a cardboard box to the top of that joker and ride down. Fantastic!!
