With the closing of Trailplace.com I would like to know what other sites, besides this one, that people have found truely helpful in planning a thruhike. Maybe extend that thought to the most informative and helpful website concerning any aspect of the Appalachian Trial.

For info on the AT..with the trailplace.com closure I would suggest:

Keep checking in at whiteblaze.net
maintain a good email relationship with Jack Tarlin (Baltimore Jack) He is as close to an AT enclopedia as there is!
ATC website (www.appalachiantrail.org (http://www.appalachiantrail.org))
www.aldha.org (http://www.aldha.org)
ALDHA gatherings! Anyone in process of comtemplating an AT thru hike.. the ADHA gathering is a must if you can possibly make it. A goldmine of information. The event is so comprehensive both Jack and Warren show up!

Or you could do what we did before the internet...check out some books at the library, get the AT guidebooks, and most importantly, get out on the Trail and see for yourself.

The ATDB is a great resource as well:

One site with some useful information on thruhiking (not specific to the AT, but about thruhiking in general) is thru-hiker.com (don't forget the dash between "thru" and "hiker"). The article section is pretty good (it's hit and miss, just like the article section here at WB is) and I found some particulary helpful information on dietary needs of long distance hikers there.

Appalachian Tater,

You may want to remove this from your list. That site doesn't appear to have any connection to the Trail.

Thanks, I have been donating during the last few minutes so I could change it. I had to use a different browser--I had tried in the past but was unable to complete the transaction.

Now there's a typo that paid-off. :)

Whiteblaze thanks you for your donation!

For those who have no clue what we are talking about, let me explain. For a small donation to Whiteblaze, you will acquire the ability to edit your posts. When you're as lousy a typist as I am, it's certainly worth the donation. Attroll has said that the server cost $250/month. If he had to pay for that out of his pocket, this site wouldn't be around for long. If you enjoy this site, follow Appalachian Tater's lead and make a donation. I know Attroll will appreciate your support, and together, we'll keep Whiteblaze alive.

When tried to donate the 1st time, I couldn't. I succeeded by using the computer of a relative who regularly uses Pay Pal.

:-? Maybe my problem had something to do with security settings? Recently I donated again without a problem.

Thanks for the huge list Tater. A lot of those sites I have found to be very useful, but there were some new ones to me and I checked them out and they were great. Thanks again.

I've found JustJeff's site really helpful, especially if you are interested in hammocking-- www.tothewoods.net

Here are two AT trail mileage sites that I found useful for approximating the distance for my section hikes. The mileage isn't always correct given relocations, but it's good enough to help me do initial planning.

The Backpacker.com AT Database (by state, milepoint, etc.): http://www.thebackpacker.com/trails/at.php

AT Distance Calculator (between 2 milepoints): http://www.ragtag.org/dbatdist.html

Try www.spiriteaglehome.com (http://www.spiriteaglehome.com) and look on the bottom rt corner, that may be what you're looking for.

The first AT site on the Internet was Kathy's Appalachian Trail Home Page:
http://www.fred.net/kathy/at.html
And the first Internet email list was Ryan's at-l:
http://www.backcountry.net/
Them was the days!

That's it. Thanks Tater. This was one of the first things I had read about the AT and it hooked me. Glad to have it back.

Someone earlier in the thread mentioned the at-l email group, they can be hit or miss sometimes. Sometimes there is some great information there, sometimes it seems quite silly. I am starting to think it is part taking about the AT, but it is also about keeping in touch with your fellow AT hiker. But, if you put a general question out there, you will get many responses from many different people if it is something that has wide varied opinions. Overall, there are a lot of AT hikers on that list who are willing to give you endless amounts of information to the point of throwing your computer off the nearest cliff (possibly on your next AT hike) because there is some much information there. They are kind people who, overall, have helped me quite a bit with my planning.
