How long of a trip? If it's just a short trip - say a week. Then I would not plan big meal portions. Generally speaking, your appetite is not that great during the first week of hiking. If you’re planning a longer hike, then you may want to consider dehydrating foods, such as, meats, fruits, and vegetables. I never use the prepackaged foods, too much money and too little nutritional value, imho.

Disregard my previous post, I just read your TITLE: "Food for a Day".
I would just take some wine, cheese and finger sandwiches.
