I'd like to hike from Grafton Notch to Gorham, NH. I only have the ME trail maps however which stop at the NH/ME border. Can anyone with the NH maps, please give me a brief description of the trail from the NH/ME border to Gorham?

distance, # lean-tos/campsites, elevation gain, etc. Thanks.

If you're interested in a reply that is more useful than the previous one, try the ALDHA online companion section covering NH and ME (http://www.aldha.org/companyn/nh-me07.pdf)

It's only about 16 miles, with 2 Campsites
(1) Gentian Pond Shelter, about 4.25 miles south of Me/NH Line.
(2) Trident Col. Tentsites, about 5 miles south of Gentian Pond and 7 miles north of US 2 (Gorham).

Elevation gain/loss will be nothing compared what you've already experienced from Grafton Notch the the Line. Biggest change will be coming down from Mt Hayes @ 2,555ft to US 2 @ ~750ft.

BTW: You could blue-blaze from vicinity of Mt Hayes directly to Gorham via Mahoosuc Trail.

Or you could support the AT and buy the guidebook/map.

Awesome! I'm new to the site (came here since Trailplace.com was shut down) and wasn't familiar with this great resource. Sorry for my ignorance.

That's pretty uncaring there Wilconow. He could click the link and use the money he would have spent on books/maps to save the children of Darfur. But no. The poster now has only two choices, click the link or support the AT. Way to get things so quickly to black and white to better demonstrate your moral superiority.

I think ATTroll is the one who put the work into the database, thank him. I used it this summer for a short section of the A.T. myself.

There is a climb from gorham to cascade mtn ~ 1,900 feet. As climbs go, it's not really bad - no super steep sections. From there to Mt Success, it's a series of 500 to 700 foot climbs and descents. Mt Success is 3565' and is a pretty descent climb. Once atop Mt Success, you're only 2 miles from the border.

There is only one shelter between Gorham and the border and its about 11 miles away from Gorham.

Enjoy the trail there. It's a real pretty section.

You will enjoy the AT on Old Speck, it is a tough descent going SOBO, I took the grafton notch loop trail up. When going down this mountain, be prepared for a lot of exposed granite rocks faces that require careful hiking.

Supurb hiking,
