I interupt the normal flow of posts for a special announcement.

Dateline ...MONSON, ME - AUGUST 15TH 2007

At approximately 5:00 PM Yeseterday (8/15/07), the hiker known as BadAss Turtle (BAT) arrived in Monson, ME, having completed her end-2-end hike of the Appalachian Trail that started in March of 2001. BAT was unable to complete her hiked in 2001 and has returned to the trail every year since to fill in the segments she had missed - the last of which being from Rangeley to Monson. In the course of this section hike we were treated to a meeting with ATtroll (of Whiteblaze.net fame) at West Carry Pond Lean-to.

To celebrate her accomplishment and recognize her perseverence, we are headed up to Baxter today and will summit Katahdin in the morning.

I know return you to your normall scheduled Whiteblaze banter ...

Way to go! Now keep on hiking or cut back on those calories to avoid being known as Big Ass Turtle. ;)

Just kidding! Kinda. :sun

However you slice it, it's a heckuva accomplishment! Enjoy! You worked hard for this.

PS: 7 years ago yesterday I was in Monson poised to push on to Katahdin. August is a fine time to be in Maine!

I think I'm gonna let YOU tell her that one Mowgli !!

By the way ...we met another "Mowgli" on the trail in the Bigelows. He was cranking out 25 mile days so our meeting with him was singular and brief !!

Hey ...what's this "lesser half" stuff ????

As far as seeing us both soon ...you'd better hike fast. Sitting in the Appalachain Trail Cafe at the moment and heading out to Baxter soon for an early morning summit. Weather report is for a clear day. Course this is Maine and anything can happen.

Hoping for a Class A Day !!

Kludos to BAT!

Sorry I didn't get a care package/celebratory surprise to Monson as promised. Looks like it may be a better late than never proposition. Again, thanks for all the help while I was in Wyoming.

PS Don't miss Wayword Sons (http://www.waywordsons.com/) when they play at UW in Sept.

Turns out our timing was PERFECT !! Absolutely a Class 1 day and tonight the clouds have filled the sky and the rain has started. We really lucked out on this one. First couple of days were dicey but the rest of the hike, including Katahdin, was fantastic. Would post a pic but am sitting in the Appalachain Cafe in Millinocket and don't have any way to upload a pic. Will get one posted when we get home.

Appreciate all the well wishes and again ...thanks for your entries in the shelter register welcoming us to Maine !!

We re-lived the dream !!

=====================================

I can tell you that she definitely does ....having completed MOST of her AT miles that year. Like you, I'm glad to have been part of her initial journey and follow-up sections.

BAT is pretty busy this week getting ready for classes, which start next week here in Wyoming but I know she'll really appreciate your note.

August is a fine time to be in Maine!

Yeah, I'm pretty sick about it that I can't afford a far-North hike this year. Maine in August was wicked-cool last year, and I really hope that I can do it again in '08!

P.S. CONGRATULATIONS! :D

It's an awesome journey and accomplishment. Great job. Please pass on my congrats to her.

There is nothing like the experience of finishing the trail. For me is was a monumental event in my life which I reflected on several times during the 100 mile wilderness. When I first saw that summit sign as I was getting closer, it was hard to walk because my eyes were filled with tears.

I'm glad you could share that special life journey with each other.
