Has anybody tried Glad® SimplyCooking™ Microwave Steaming Bags (http://www.glad.com/simplycooking/steaming.php) for freezer bag cooking? I'm wondering how this product compares to Glad Freezer Bags.

Here is an interesting site: http://www.plasticsmythbuster.org/rumors.asp. (http://www.plasticsmythbuster.org/rumors.asp)

This product has small holes "steam vents" near the top of the bag. I would think spices would leak from this holes when the meals were in your pack, but I haven't actually tried using the bags. I do like the design as it is it made to stand up even when hot.

I've got some but haven't tried them yet.

FD, I'm glad you mentioned the vent holes. I missed that detail!

I haven't trail used them yet, but I can say they rock at steaming veggies in the microwave!
I bought a couple boxes and need to try them out. They are pretty big, so they would work (hopefully!) for parties of 2 or more well.

Couple drawbacks. They're expensive and the steam vent holes make them less than ideal for freezer use.

I guess I'm lazy, but I like the idea of grabbing a bag out of the freezer and tossing it straight into my pack with no other prep needed.

I have used these bags for UL baking and they work great. I don't think they are suited for FBC.

Went on a shakedown trip this weekend to test out some new gear. Forgot to bring food. So I stopped at the grocery store to grab whatever I could find and ended up buying some of these bags.

So long as you keep them upright, the vents are not a problem as they are located immediately south of the plastic zip. I don't know about y'all, but not even with a normal freezer bag do I fill it up to the zip.

Also noticed that these make an excellent, and cheaper, substitute for the PackBowl. (http://www.wildernessdining.com/bp167217.html) These bags cost more per package than the Pack Bowl, but you also get more in the package so it works out in the end.

Moral of the story: (1) good multi-use piece of kit but expensive as heck and (2) packing lists are your friend but only if you've put food on them :P

Last month the bags were mentioned in BP magazine and since then a lot more have been trying them out - and that as a bowl they work great. Enough use them that I made a cozy to fit them :p

Looks like an industry supported site though.

I picked some up as well. I'm thinking of using them as a packable bowl. Use freezer bags for the dry stuff. Add boiling water and the dry stuff to the steam bags, mix, wait, and eat! That way, I only have one wet bag in my trash/bear bag! Course, since I have enough smarts to rinse the steam bag, I could hang it out to dry over night! Maybe...
Just to be safe I'll hang it with the bear bag. ;)

Passion, that was what one of the guys on BPL did - he rinsed the bag out and reused it. He said it lasted a couple uses till he put too much water in (he lifted it up from the top when using it to bail water( and ripped the top off. So don't use it to bail water :D
