Hope this is in the right place. I knew things were big in Texas but this is crazy big. Hate to run into this on those early mornings out of camp.

Quick! One of you Texans run out and gather a bag for Zelph.

He'll want to see if it works for a stove wick.

Anything that kills a million mosquitoes is OK in my book.

That's what I kept yelling at the screen during Frodo's fight with the spider in Lord of the Rings. :D

Pretty much like one pesky mosquito sounds like at 0300 in a tent.

Thanks for the reminder! In 1964 I was backpacking a section of river bank in North Texas and I walked right into a huge spider web strung between two trees(my head was down looking at the ground for snakes so I didn't see the web)and immediately a HUGE spider rushed down the web at me and I freaked. Squealing like an infant, I bolted hard to the left just before the big thing reached me and the adrenaline made me jump. Afterwards I was as usual a shell of a man(boy)with beady lizard eyes looking everywhere at once.

I hope you killed it! Once a spider learns to associate people with food it's all over! Only spiders that instinctively go out of their way to avoid humans should pass their genes on!

So, what you're saying is that I can just pack a buch of little spiders that make me a new bug net each night? How much weight will that save? And how easy will it be to take over all the shelters?

Remember that movie where William Shatner woke up aat the end and looked out the window and the whole city was engulfed in spiderwebs?

Zelph, I'm not too far from the park. Are you serious about wanting a little of the web for some nepharious experiment? If so, e-mail me at [email protected].

The bigger spider with the yellow, shown on the video, is a writing spider. We have them here, and they build large, interesting webs in the fall, with zig-zag "writing" in the web. They don't eat whole forests though.

I'm surmising it was just one.

Could've been a marbled orb weaver. We have lots of them here in the fall.

That would be her.

They are talking about the spiderweb on NPR right now.

Mind you, she is just one of many in that creation.

I've been meaning to say hi anyway, beeman. Just got two colonies this spring.

Holy Crap!!! I just about jumped out of my chair a second ago. I was getting a little wierded out reading about the giant spider web and contemplating what it would be like to accidently walk into that thing. And what do you think happens? You got it...a spider comes down his line from the ceiling right between me and the computer screen. Freaky coincidence.

Are we talking spider-spooked? I went into my dark tipi after working outside and reached for a sierra cup with a little tea in it to drink and as the cup touched my lips I saw a huge wolf spider in it next to my mouth. I flung the cup and the spider across the lodge and screamed like a terrified little girl. The sounds we make at times like this shows our true character.

I was serious for one moment and then decided not! Thanks for the offer beeman. If you're close, take a run on out there and give us a first hand account of what you see. Get a sample of the web in an envelope while your there, I'll give you compensation for mailing it to me. I'll mount it between to sheets of glass and mount it in a frame along with the article about it. This occurance is rare!!!!!!!

It's known to me as a Banana spider. At time when their webs are approached by humans they will cause the web to undulate as if the spider is using it as a trampoline, back and forth motion. The're cool!!!!
