When I hiked Deep Gap to Winding Stair earlier in the summer a trail maintainer told me there was a new shelter somewhere.

I can't for the life remember where he said.

Anyone know?

Thanks

Maybe we can turn this into a 25 page shelter bashing thread. LW, Matty??

I stayed at the new shelter just north of Wayah Bald in July. It was very nice, but the fire pit is on a slant. Also, going North it says "Shelter 1/4 mile". Keep going, we backtracked up and down the hill thinking we missed the entrance. It is more like 1/2 mile.

Yeah, I was thinking that after I saw it was straight forward. I'm glad I mentioned the word shelter in my post. Don't vasectomize this post. I hope to hike past the NEW SHELTER soon. :D

I think it's called Wayah Bald Shelter.

I stopped in at the shelter in early August and saw the shelter register called it "Wayah (either Bald or Gap) Shelter". The shelves in the front were interesting as I thought at first they were sleeping platforms... I will echo what Altared said about the fire pit being on a slant. There is also at least one tent platform on the way to the shelter and it is pretty small and perched on a bank. The shelter is real close to the trail and was pretty brand spanking new. I too am not a shelter fan except to stop in for lunch...

Isn' t that the one that's handicapped accessible? There are hand rails and ramps to the privy and at least one tent site.

Here is a picture of the privy. Not sure about the rails though... Come to think of it, it did all look pretty easy to get to...

Mel,

I had no problems when I went through in early August. I actually found there were many more springs running than my Whiteblaze book listed, which was great! you'll have to check with someone who has been through recently though to be sure. It sure has been dry here in West Virginia...

Saw my first bear on the AT about 1.5 miles South of Tellico Gap!!
