We're approaching the anniversary of 9/11 and in rememberance of the victims groups of hikers from all over will summit and raise flags high on the 48 4000+ footers in NH. This tradition began a few years ago and will be upheld tomorrow (to allow more participation). So AT hikers and all others beware and take notice. I'll personally be hiking a flag and ridiculously heavy flag pole up Mount Field (not on AT). www.flagsonthe48.org (http://www.flagsonthe48.org)

"It ain't heavy its my country" Great job on this!!! I will ride up to West Mt. in Harriman St Park on Mon and camp there on Tues I'll raise the flag at the right time. West Mtn is nowhere near a 4k footer but it overlooks NYC.

Hey mrc237, Maybe I'll join you. I'm working the evening shift next week but I could do a mid night hike into the shelter. It's a short walk fron the hiker parking lot. It will all depend on what time I get finished at work though.

Great idea but I live to far to NH to get involved in this acitivie on Sunday. I could do Slide or Hunter Montains in the Catkills. Both are above 4000 feet.

All went well today. I hoisted the flag on Mt Field, did a short loop on Willey, Tom and Avalon and will post a picture or two when I can. Back to the AT.

Flags of the 48 went well, I was on Jackson for their flag, was at the summit of Pierce to early for theirs. It was a great experience being up there for that.
This is not the thread to mock 9-11, Jester. I hope you were not mocking that day in history, and if you were, shame on you. I do not like calling people out on things in public in these forums, but this a exception.

Angewrite, congrats on your 2,174 mile hike! Also, thanks for bring this tradition to my attention (and of course, others). 9/11 must always be honored by our country and your raising the flag on Mt. field is very honorable and respectful.

You're not comming to the hiker feed in Monson. And for once out of respect for the 9/11 victims and their families we should keep this thread serious.
