I am looking to buy a new bag and have narrowed the search to two bags. The sawtooth and campmor 20 degree down. Anyone have any advice? They are close in fill weight and pack size as well as within 10 oz's of total weight. Right now I can get the sawtooth for 169.97 and the campmor for 109.97 What do you all think?:-?

I have no opinion on the Marmot, but I have been very happy with my Campmor 20* Down. I also own a Kelty Lightyear 25* Down but I usually leave it at home as I'm not a fan of the 3/4 zip.

I have a Sawtooth X-wide as well as a number of older slumberjack down bags (Which I believe are also labeled for Campmor - or used to be).
The Campmor bag is good, but I really like the Sawtooth. I do think the quality, materials and stitching is a bit better than the Campmor. However, with that said, I think Campmor Quality, at that price, is a very good deal.
If you look at it over 20 years (Which a god down bag can easily last, you are paying $3 more per year for a name brand bag - not bad in the event you ever need to go back to the manufacturer.

Until I recently upgraded, I used a Campmor 20* down bag for 5 years and nearly 3 long distance hikes and have nothing but good things to say.

It looks like although the Marmot is 5 degrees warmer, but it's about a half pound heavier. You can get it here for $149 (http://www.udans.com/istar.asp?a=6&id=2078!220&color=2753&size=Left&)

I went back and looked at them again and then thought about my 17-year old down Slumberjack bags. The down in the old bags is still good, but they are leaking down constantly, as the nylon shells have started to deteriorate somewhat over the past 5 -8 years. It seems simple nylon shells cannot easily last as long as the down fill can.

IMMHO, I would recommend you go with a Marmot if you want the entire bag to last.
Specs
CMPMR~ 550 Down, Fill wght ~ 19oz, shell weight~ 17oz.
MARMT~ 650 Down, Fill wght ~ 22oz, shell weight~ 24oz. (incl Poly Baffle)
Note - Comparatively, It appears there is a lot more warmth for the Marmot just based on the type and weight of the fill

Since down can easily last 20-30 years if properly cared for (my 1983 EMS Robson Long -25 Expedition bag is wonderful proof), based upon the difference between these two bags, I would prefer to spend a little more money and get a better shell material (the Marmot), even thought the bag might be a bit heavier.

Food for thought - Few ever say, "I wish I would have spent less money and gotten a cheaper piece of gear". It is usually the other way around.

If you want a bag that will last you through 2030 (or so), both will probably do it, though the Campmor will likely leak much down over those years.

The quality of Marmot bags is excellent. All bags with light shells will leak a little down every now and then and the Marmots are no exception. I also believe that the Marmot temperature ratings are fairly accurate.

22 oz of 650 fill down vs. 19 oz of 550 fill down is quite a difference.

Are the weights accurate? A lot of manufacturers give inaccurate weights. Hopefully with a sleeping bag, it is because of a little overfill!

Can't comment on the Campmor bags, but L. Wolf has one and it probably gets a good bit of use, so you would probably be happy with either one.

I'm also looking at these bags right now. Couple of questions:

1. The campmor 20* doesn't show a collar or neck baffle, like the 0* has. Does it have one or no?

2. Does the sawtooth have a collar? BTW the Sawtooth is listed as 600 fp down, not 650. Is there that much difference between 550 and 600?

I have a sawtooth and its great. Ive used it down to 10-15 degrees without a problem. That said I have been looking at the campmor bags for my dad since people have been saying good things about them. If money wasnt an issue Id love to get a montbell 15 degree.

You could call campmor and ask them.

I can stealth surf at work, but a phone call would surely tip off the boss. :D

you could take a "smoke break" outside and check it out, unless you live in NH that is...

The Campmor bag doesn't have a collar/neck baffle and there's little difference between 550 and 600 fill.

The Campmor bag is listed at 2lb 4oz but it's closer to 2.5lb.
