Hey Alpine,

You know I am. For an exact date I'd hope it to be 20th Feb 2004. Depends on Airline Tickets mainly but may start a week earlier/later.

Depends on the weather out west. If I start on the AT, it would probably be on May 9 and may be on top of Springer, or maybe in Damascus.

Me too! April 1st...........right in the thick of it all!

April 1st -- 15th
When ever I get there.

I'm planning a mid to late March start. Tentatively March 18th. I was planning on late February but after talking with Baltimore Jack and some others at the Gathering I've pushed it back abit. I am SOOO excited. Finally got my gear finalized and tested on 3-4 day trips, with one more shake down starting the end of next week. I plan on doing some winter stuff in the Whites but will be using completely different gear.

March '04 cant get here fast enough!!

I think I am gonna leave later, around May 1st or so.

11-06-2003, 23:12
Well, it looks like everybody has different dates in mind. Im hoping to be on the trail sometime between early-mid march. I am goin to judge it by how february weather looks and go from ther. Also if i am unsure how i will get down to springer. I live in NY and dont know if i should fly down, take a bus, or train and then how do i get to trail head from there?

It's good to have an end to a journey, but in the end it's the journey that really matters Taken from LT logbook

I'm going to start early-to-mid-April, if my newly-found knee problem cures itself. As if my back wasn't bad enough already, my left knee has started to give me major trouble.

If it continues to give problems, I'll use the next year to save up for surgery..

I think I'll choose the name "Falling to Pieces" as my trail name :)

Easy pal. I live in Damascus.;)

You got the right idea. The weather in March can be 80 degrees and 12 inches of snow the next day! It is silly to start out with a blizzard coming in a few days. The forecasts are reasonably acurate for the weeks ahead and you might as well exploit them.

Chef, take the train. I've taken it 12 times from R.I. over the years. It's lots of fun. It arrives in the morning so you have lots of time to get to the mountain. Almanac will be doing shuttles/hostel this year.

I hiked to Damascus from Springer in May 2002. So, I may continue north for a month or two, or start from Springer. One cool thing about starting late would be to get to see all (or most) of the NOBO hikers, rather than just a small group.

I'm leaving Springer in late February. (Can't WAIT!!!)

11-07-2003, 11:12
The hiking buddy who was supposed to join me for my Roanoke section hike last month and sprained his ankle on the soccer field a week before our departure (I stopped two weeks before) is pushing to start from Springer in April. So, while not a thru-hike we may meet up with some of the late starters as I get the GA/Southern NC section out of the way. Per a recommendation by Peaks a long time ago, it will be interesting to experience the thru-hiker rush after so many years of section hiking.

11-07-2003, 11:17
CHEF- I have been debating how to get there too. If you want to save money and can stand taking a train, that would be the best way from what i have figured out. Then just take a cab or find someone around there to give you a ride to the trail head

11-07-2003, 11:42
Starting on March 10th.

11-07-2003, 11:56
I'm beginning 1 March (Approach Trail 29 Feb). I know it'll be cold to start out with, but I just can't wait any longer!

Alpine: a May or June start in Damascus is not a bad idea for a flip/flop. You hike with the NObos to K, then hike south with the Sobos to Springer. And you miss the early crowds that drop out by Virginia... By the way, Damascus is a great town! You don't have to spend all your time in the bars, it can be fun anyway!

11-07-2003, 13:45
Probably March 10 or 11, maybe later in March..... or April..... or possibly early May.

11-07-2003, 14:19
I'll be starting somewhere between Feb 26 - 29th. I'm going to follow L. Wolf's recommendation and take the train from CT or RI (parent's house) and get shuttled in.

Found a link to the shuttle (http://www.hikerhostel.com/). Any other shuttles out there?

11-11-2003, 03:01
I'll be starting somewhere in the vicinity of early to mid March. The exact date depends on how the details of my ride down to Springer work out-- I probably won't know exactly until early next year. Ideally, I'd like to start on a weekday-- probably March 8th-12th, but I may have to start on a weekend, in which case I would like to start on the 13th or 14th. Or maybe the 6th or 7th. :D

Hopefully that the tax refund check will arrive late February so that I can start hike on mid March to early April.

Look forward to hike NOBO!

Feb. 20 for me....plane ticket booked....gear bought....shakedown hikes underway....the wait is killing me!

12-15-2003, 10:29
Mid March here. Will be buying plane ticket and turning in letter of resignation soon after Christmas.

12-15-2003, 11:53

Anyone know why Alpines posts have been withdrawn?

12-15-2003, 12:28
ultimately only Alpine knows for sure why he withdrew his posts (ie edited them to remove the content)

it is my opinion that there was some sort of a personality clash with some others that posted in reply to his posts that quickly boiled over and he left with considerable bad feelings toward some individuals.

12-15-2003, 13:50
I'll probly yo-yo off Springer march 1st. After some down time at Mountain Crossings (neels gap). It's fun to watch new nobos set fire to the picnic tables with their stoves and stuff. Not much comic relief during a winter sobo.

I disagreed with Alpine on an issue in another thread, but in private messaging found him to be quite gracious and humble. As a result, I gained more respect for him than I might have had from AN ISOLATED FEW of his public posts.

Hopefully, if he has a problem, it's just that public posts can't convey the friendlier facial expressions that soften the edges the way we mean ... and sometimes we all hit ENTER sometimes when we should reflect.

Having said that, there are more than one WhiteBlazer on my IGNORE list, but Alpine isn't one of them. ;)

yes - I think that if Alpine had just made (more ? some ?) use of the ignore user feature things would have gone a lot better for all of us

I hope he hasn't stopped posting here. He was very helpful. He was pretty good at constructive criticism. Helped me a bunch with my thru-hike list.

Late Mar/early Apr. I started Feb. 13 the first time , I make better time without snow and I'm older now, just isn't as much fun sliding down hill. I'll watch the weather also. Cowboy
