When i was young i just cowboy camp and when it would rain ,just grab some palm and make cover. Now you have a big choice,so what do most lug or put down for shelter?

I was sectioning the Roan Highlands, and was planning to spend the night at the Overmountain Barn. Guess what...every kid had to invade it. Only a few hikers made it in. A bunch of us were pissed.

I ended up pitching my tarp up on the field. That was my shelter. I am lucky it was a bit of a warm night. Next time, I hike in earlier or set up somewhere else.

Growing up on Merritt Island we used the following rule of thumb:

Don't camp between May 1 and Nov 1 and you won't need a shelter and you won't get eaten by bugs and you won't get robbed by racoons and you more than likely won't even see alligator.

OF course we were kids and we thought those things were bad. :)

I'd use a hammock anywhere that is hot and swampy.

Hammocks are the way to to go. I haven't hiked any in South Florida, but I've never had a problem finding a place to hang anywhere else in Florida.
