Located a few miles north of the James River crossing. Lovely setting fairly close to a rushing creek. Basic 6-person design with two uncovered picnic tables and fire rings.

Fair amount of overflow tent space. As of October 2003, there were a few dozen log "stumps" that had been set up around the shelter as mini-tables. The stumps probably came from all the blowdowns that hit the area during a recent hurricane and associated micro-burst.

Nice swimming areas are available 1-2 miles south of the shelter.

This shelter as the name implies is set down in a hollow amongst a beautiful setting with a rushing creek and abundant tent sites.
The privy at Johns Hollow is the new handicap accessible type that I also saw at Punchbowl and Matts Creek among other shelters this past week.
Kinda neat sitting on the throne at 3 am looking up through the clear plexiglass ceiling at the billions of stars in the sky.

Who built and maintains this shelter? It sounds divine.--Kinnickinic

The Natural Bridge Appalachian Trail Club is responsible for that section.

This is in a beautiful spot but because it is down at the bottom of the hollow it can get extremely humid and buggy in mid-summer. Not much of a breeze.

Thanks for the pic. That shelter has a twin (maybe more). It looks exactly like the Story Spring shelter in Vt.

Yes, I noticed that there are a lot of shelters of this design.
