I wear them as camp shoes, and intend to continue doing so, but thought this piece would be of interest to some.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- At rail stations and shopping malls around the world, reports are popping up of people, particularly young children, getting their toes caught in escalators. The one common theme seems to be the clunky soft-soled clogs known by the name of the most popular brand, Crocs.
One of the nation's largest subway systems - the Washington Metro - has even posted ads warning riders about wearing such shoes on its moving stairways. The ads feature a photo of a crocodile, though they don't mention Crocs by name.
Four-year-old Rory McDermott got a Croc-clad foot caught in an escalator last month at a mall in northern Virginia. His mother managed to yank him free, but the nail on his big toe was almost completely ripped off, causing heavy bleeding.
At first, Rory's mother had no idea what caused the boy's foot to get caught. It was only later, when someone at the hospital remarked on Rory's shoes, that she began to suspect the Crocs and did an Internet search.
"I came home and typed in 'Croc' and 'escalator,' and all these stories came up," said Jodi McDermott, of Vienna, Va. "If I had known, those would never have been worn."
According to reports appearing across the United States and as far away as Singapore and Japan, entrapments occur because of two of the biggest selling points of shoes like Crocs: their flexibility and grip. Some report the shoes get caught in the "teeth" at the bottom or top of the escalator, or in the crack between the steps and the side of the escalator.
The reports of serious injuries have all involved young children. Crocs are commonly worn by children as young as 2. The company introduced shoes in its smallest size, 4/5, this past spring.
Niwot, Colo.-based Crocs Inc. said it does not keep records of the reasons for customer-service calls. But the company said it is aware of "very few" problems relating to accidents involving the shoes, which are made of a soft, synthetic resin.
"Thankfully, escalator accidents like the one in Virginia are rare," the company said in a statement.
In Japan, the government warned consumers last week that it has received 39 reports of sandals - mostly Crocs or similar products - getting stuck in escalators from late August through early September. Most of the reports appear to have involved small children, some as young as two years old.
Kazuo Motoya of Japan's National Institute of Technology and Evaluation said children may have more escalator accidents in part because they "bounce around when they stand on escalators, instead of watching where they place their feet."
In Singapore, a 2-year-old girl wearing rubber clogs - it's unclear what brand - had her big toe completely ripped off in an escalator accident last year, according to local media reports.
And at the Atlanta airport, a 3-year-old boy wearing Crocs suffered a deep gash across the top of his toes in June. That was one of seven shoe entrapments at the airport since May 1, and all but two of them involved Crocs, said Roy Springer, operations manager for the company that runs the airport terminal.
One U.S. retailer that caters to children, Mattel subsidiary American Girl, has posted signs in three locations directing customers wearing Crocs or flip-flop sandals to use elevators instead of escalators.
During the past two years, so-called "shoe entrapments" in the Washington subway have gone from being relatively rare to happening four or five times a week in the summer, though none has caused serious injuries, said Dave Lacosse, who oversees the subway's 588 escalators, the most of any U.S. transit system.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said escalator accidents caused more than 10,000 injuries last year, but the agency has few records of specific shoe problems. Only two shoe entrapments have been reported by consumers since the beginning of 2006. One reported in May involved "rubber footwear."
Agency spokesman Ed Kang urged people who have had problems to report them on the commission's Web site.
Crocs officials said they were working with the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation on public education initiatives. But the group's executive director, Barbara Allen, said that's not true.
Allen said a Crocs official called her in September 2006 about possible cooperation, even suggesting the company might put a tag in its shoes with the foundation's Web address. But since that first contact, Crocs has not called, and nobody from the company will return Allen's calls, she said.
Washington Metro's Lacosse and other escalator experts say the best way to prevent shoe entrapments is to face the direction the stairs are moving, keep feet away from the sides and step over the teeth at the end.
Lacosse, of the Washington subway system, said he is personally skittish of Crocs and other soft-soled shoes.
"Would I wear them? No," he said. "And I tell my children not to wear them either."

Thanks for the note. Out 17 month old wears them (a little pink pair). We'll be much more careful on escalators - where we carry her.

The biggest danger of Crocs, of course, is that you end up wearing dorky looking footwear . Something Tele-tubbies should be wearing and not a grown adult. ;)

Egads! I made my comment even before I read that article!

Sorry folks...Crocs are just that..a croc. :-)

My passion for being anti-croc is that the fact the HQ of this company is just 5 min up the road from me. I see them EVERYWHERE.

Fugly shoes. Simply fugly.

ps. I just finished the short article. They dressed him up in crocs as a joke! See CROCS are NOT meant to be taken as real shoes. ;)

I first noticed Crocs from the backpacking crowd. I then started noticing them all over the place. I have been around campfires during weekend trips, where just about everyone was wearing Crocs (or knock-offs).

I've even backpacked in them in areas where we had multiple stream crossings. A few miles in them did me no harm but I think I would blister-up at significant distances.

From Trail Journals, YoungNDum hiked over 20 miles in one day in his, early in his AT Thru this year, when he was having "boot issues".

so i'm confused, you mean if we don't get off the escalator, or put my foot in some moving contraption where it doesn't fit, it might get caught and i might loose a toe?
i think somepeople need to pay more attention to where they put their/their kids feet.

I was at an agricultural fair in Bangkok some years ago and a little boy got stuck in one of the machines that hooks and transports beef sides across the slaughterhouse. Not a pretty sight. Mom was a mess. Boy did survive.

Take the stairs - Problem solved.

Although not incredibly stylish nor cutting-edge , Crocs are quite comfortable and I wear them to work on almost a daily basis (assuming the top-siders are missing). I even run on the treadmill with them at the gym (I had lost my sneakers for several months).

I find it hard to believe some of you hikers are concerned about what your comfy shoes look like!! When I've seen most of y'all are the trail, style doesn't seem to be a major concern!

Break the mold. And be comfy.

At 12 oz..they are far too heavy to be camp shoes.

Besides, I'll stick to my traditional sandals. Worked for Jesus, worked for the Roman Legions, worked for generations of beach bums. Works for me. ;)

Finally, I don't care how non-conformist you are: BRIGHT GREEN CLOWN SHOES ?!?!?!?!?! 'Nuff said.

Great advice!

All this time, I've been taking 12 oz of Snickers instead of 12 oz of plastic camp shoe. If only I had more experience backpacking, perhaps I would know that fact.

Once worn down a little, they are super slippery on the bottom, especially coming into stores on a rainy day. They make great knee pads for lawn work, or for garden stuff though when you are ready to retire them!

me and my sons mom were on the same step of the john wannamakers 8th floor toy dept escalator rideing up. at the top were teeth missing from the grill where the steps dissapear. our chuck taylor low tops got sucked in on the two feet in the middle of the step. mine and hers.as the machine chewed us alive, with blood everywhere, i fell forward and slammed the stop button witch was exactly to my side as i fell. a few more gulps of the massive gears and our feet were in deep. in a moment of superhuman ability, i ripped the two sets of laces and gromets from the shoes and pulled us free. donnas foot was smaller and therefor whent in deeper. my foot was bigger so got crushed tighter. as the security gayrd was panicking and an olkd lady was pucking and everyone else was gasping,...i picked donna up in my arms and walked the few blocks to the emergency ward at pennsylvania hospitol. this would be the reason my lawsuit got me omly 500 dollars. the judge said," how hurt could you have been if you were able to carry donna to hospitol?" to witch i tryed to make the case of how in a crissis, people are capable of great feats while wounded and that the store had refused to call an ambulance till a supervisor could be located.non of this was denied in court. they admited they have that policy. they admited the guard panicked. donna got alot of money. i got 500 bucks. when the judge made her decision, i asked," what about the scars ?" to witch she asked to see them. and with two bands of deep purple across the top of my foot, she said she couldnt see anything. the nurse in the emergency ward looked at us apon entering and asked," escalator accedent? wannamakers? 8th floor?" i said yes in astonishment. she said, and i quote," its a lovely peice of philadelphia history, but its a real maneater." she counted 8 gobbelings in her tenure of head nurse.

Well I guess I'm just one of the sheep this time. I love my Crocs and I keep them by the door all the time. I wear them to go to the mailbox, quick trips to the store, to family get togethers and of course for camp use. If the went with my dress slacks I'd wear them to work but of course they don't. They are the most comfortable footwear I have ever had and easy to get on and off. I hate shoes and Crocs are a happy medium. Souls are nice and thick too. Makes me feel better about crossing rivers/streams.
