There is a North Alabama chapter of the Sierra Club. Check out www.sierraclub.org/na (http://www.sierraclub.org/na)
The Sipsey is great. Did an overnight with my son back in January. Very nice even though there is no elevation to speak of.
Also come up to Huntsville and explore the Land Trust trails. They do not allow camping, but you could base camp at Monte Sano State Park and hike a lot of miles from there.

Im Metro Regoin Hike Coordinator. Check out our calendar of events.
Also there is a Sipsey Wilderness hiking club, they meet in Double Springs once a month.
