This forum is to see what type of footwear is commonly used on the AT for a thru hike. This should be answered only by those who have completed their Thru-Hike. Also those who have completed at least 50% of it in one shot, with no hike-stopping injuries attributed to their feet.

I switched to trail runners (made by Brooks) when I developed a calf issue with my boots, along with Spenco hiker insoles. Never went back to boots. They were great. Wore them all the way from Harper's Ferry to Katahdin (I used four pairs of runners but two were free. And lots of insoles). And I swore I would never wear the things too (it's all because of White Blaze, ha ha). My son wore boots and twisted his ankle more than I did. The only section where boots might have come in handy is some of the rocky scree areas in the Presidentials - like around Jefferson, etc. But I got through that too, slow but sure.

I switched from heavy duty Vasque leather hiking boots to mid-cut NorthFace gortex trail runners. Made all the difference in the world and my aching feet no longer ache.:)
Salomon trail runners here.
Has any one completed the AT barefoo?? Start to finish???

Tyvek, in '00, started and made it at least a couple hundred miles. Lost track of him in the Smokies.

I met 2 ladies hiking barefoot in the Whites on the AT a few years back. They were close to finishing the AT and their feet were in very good shape, no bruises or cuts ,,, just some dirt.
As for me, I am the biggets fan of vasque sundowners.
