I read a book this weekend describing the GA AT (first 45 miles) as being straight up and down. I don't have a map of this section (yet). Can someone please describe these first 45 miles in respect to elevation change? Thanks! Please exclude the approach trail.

as the others have stated, Georgia seems all steep and bad when you start but it is because you are not in hiking conditioning yet. I remembered Georgia from my first hike as being very steep and difficult but the second time, after hiking N.H. and Maine, Georgia was nothing.

Using LW's description of major climbs I agree there are no major climbs or descents in Georgia, however if you are not trail conditioned you might consider some sections major. There are some short sections that are strenuous but none are as long as a mile.

I'm not quite in as good shape as LW, but I never had to rest on an uphill at any point through Georgia. However, once I crossed the state line the pull up Courthouse Bald on a sunny 70-degree day kicked my butt.

I hiked GA last summer, it is not bad, however, as stated, you are probably not in hiking shape, and you will probably have too much weight on your back, plau you are not conditioned to sleeping outside, etc..
GA welcomes you with a taste of what's to come. The Prelude Hike, and there's a reason Mountain Crossings is located 30 miles from Springer, the perfect location for light weight hiking gear sales.

For motivation, Roo and I hiked all of Georgia in June, and she is only 9 years old. The 43 year old Dad did OK, but has since lightened up his pack quite a bit...

We hated Sassafras and Justus Mountains, as Roo just pointed out to me this weekend :D She thought Blood was a piece of cake as well. I did not get near the mileage there that I thought I would, and agree that conditioning played a large part.
