Hi, all....

I'm taking the Boy Scout troop on the Chattooga River Trail in a few weeks. I used to have a map of this trail (we're hiking south from Burrell's Ford), but can't find it. I bought the one I had at REI, whch apparently doesn't sell it anymore. Anyone know where I can pick up another trail / topo map of this area?

Thanks!

Steve

Hey Steve. Don't know about any outfitters from ATL to the river, but maybe some local rafting companies around the Chattooga could help. I gotta run to work, but if I could dig one up I'd gladly send it to you. I'll check when I get home.:sun

The best and most comprehensive map is available from John Ray. His Bartram Trail guide includes all of the Bartram Trail in GA, all of the Chattooga River Trail, and the Three Forks Trail. It's the yellow book at the following link;

Just run up to Sunrift Adventures in Travelers Rest and get you a Foothills Trail guidebook. This has the section of the Foothills Trail in it that runs along the Chattooga below Burrells Ford, as well as side trails.

Thanks, Rain Man - I called, and they have a map on the shelf which sounds like the one I used to have, for about $3. Of course the only way to get it is to go in and buy it, or send them a check and they'll mail it to me, which I don't have time for....

Try Bass Pro Shop...I have found some great trail maps there that REI does not carry anymore...They use to be over in the fishing dept with the lake maps.

just follow the chattooga river...

hmm...yeah...that's certainly an option and easy to do on this trail....of course, I wouldn't be able to provide the boys working on the backpacking merit badge the information they need to be able to document / plan their hike....but thanks for the thought!

Steve, Found my Chattoga National Wild and Scenic River map that was issued by the National Forest Service. It's double sided and shows the river corridor from Whiteside Mountain in NC to the Tugaloo Resevoir at the end of Section IV. All trails around the river are on it. I believe I have 2 copies, I will send you one to borrow if you really need it.:sun

Thanks for the offer, Ed! That's the map I used to have - let me take a look at Bass Pro Shop before we go to the trouble of having you mail it to me.....

I took my scout troop on that trail about 10 years ago, and they loved it.

When we were almost back down to the southern end, many of the Scouts were saying they never wanted to go hiking again. As soon as we got loaded up in the cars and headed into Clayton to get some food, I had one of the same ones who were complaining ask me when we could do it again!

It's a beautiful trail, and not a bad hike at all. I would like to do it again, and soon. I would like to do the entire Foothills trail, and this is one very good section of that trail.:banana

Great links, faarside - of course, I just spent $10 at REI for the map!

I did find the map at the Clairmont road REI in Atlanta - the one closer to me didn't have it - I got the last one they had in stock, I think...looks like they're moving from having some local maps to going with the stock maps ordered through their corporate offices (which is what I also found at the local Bass Pro)....I wonder how many maps of Denali they sell in Atl?

It's been several years since I've been on this section of the trail - it's beautiful, no doubt - one of my favorite GA hikes (I took my family on this section about 7 years ago - the only time I've been able to get my wife out:

http://www.whiteblaze.net/forum/vbg/showimage.php?i=9984&catid=member&imageuser=6309
(hmmm - just noticed how dark my beard was - darn, I'm getting old!)

The only downside I remember is that it's also heavily travelled between the hikers and trout fishermen....

Isn't it fun taking first year scouts out for their first hike?! We took last year's group on the trail, going north from Hwy 76, last spring - about 4 miles in, then 4 miles back out - they appeared to have fun - almost all of them are signed up for this 12 mile section of trail.....
