May 1st NOBO. July 15th SOBO if you're an average hiker

LW, as a newbie here, why do you enjoy SOBO better than NOBO?

For one, sobo doesn't have the wave of hikers associated with the nobo (easier to be by yourself if thats how you like to roll)

SOBO is also considered harder, thats what makes it more fun, right?

no crowds. warm weather. awesome scenery right off the bat. lots of ponds and streams. a feeling of remoteness. the ONLY thing i didn't enjoy were the swarms of mosquitos.

yes it is physically harder. most of the major climbing and descending on the AT is done in the first 500 miles SOBO. not saying the remaining 1600 is easy but it's no where near as tough

SOBO is the way to go for all of the reasons aformentioned on this forum. The water in Maine is warmer... you will miss the hunting seasons in the Northern states... less rain... less people.... less bugs... more fresh fruits and veggies available.

But won't you go by more people, since you are going SOBO and most of them are going NOBO? In the first month or two of SOBO, won't you see a gabillion NOBOs?

shouldn't see too many, many have already dropped out

Of course I speak with no experience other than logic...

When you're crossing the NOBO wave (for me, with a July 3d start, I crossed the wave in Maine and NH), at least 70% of the starters have dropped out.

OTOH, NOBO is very entertaining. There's quite a circus going on in GA and NC in the spring.:D

Not that SOBOs all have it together from Day 1, or anything, but there are a lot fewer of us.

I think the real question is "How much do I like tacos?"

That might dictate when you're able to leave.

Looks like I will probably head sobo, since I would start after I finish my PhD.
