I'm driving to Rockland Maine from the Hudson Valley in NY. I'm looking for a place that I can car camp on the way up, so maybe half a day or so south of Rockland, something on the coast would be awesome.

Anyone got some ideas on where I can do this?

As always, any and all thoughts appreciated.

Camden Hills State Park is just up the road, 3 ?, 5 ? miles north of Rockland.

Closes 10/15

Do a Google for more info.

Hermit Island in Phippsburg is one of the few camping areas on the coast that continues to promote tent sites. They have a few sites that accommodate minimal camping trailers, but for the most part trailers can't reach most of the sites. The campground is about 65 miles from Rockland. Take Route 209 off Route 1 in Bath to Phippsburg. After 8 or nine miles, more or less, keep going straight on 216 after 209 turns sharply left (east). The Hermit Island turn off is near the end of the public road on the right.

There's a trailer campground on the left before reaching the Hermit island on the right. Hermit Island is truly a unique experience, sand dune camping on undeveloped beaches that front the Atlantic Ocean. It's worth a visit and a day or two of exploration.

All I need is a place to put a tent.

I'm leaving about 4:00PM on friday, so I'd prefer to not be setting up a tent at midnight, and this is the route http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&time=&date=&ttype=&saddr=Poughkeepsie,+NY&daddr=Rockland,+ME&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=40.052282,96.328125&ie=UTF8&ll=43.333169,-70.806885&spn=4.610474,12.041016&z=7&om=1&pw=2

I'm just kinda passing through, not really having anything in mind about checking out, I'll have to come back for a longer trip to do that

Half a day, maybe and 1/6th of a day or so is better, something less than 4-5 hours away, so a slight detour isn't a problem at all.
